He left the ballroom and headed toward the hotel rooms.
He went all the way up to the top floor where we were staying, then knocked on the door across from ours.
When the door opened, I froze for a moment.
Beth was leaning against the doorway in a low-cut silk nightgown identical to mine.
She had dyed her hair the same color as mine, even styling the ends into the exact same curls.
Before we came to the island, William had deliberately called Beth in front of me and told her to stay at the company to handle some work.
I never imagined it had all been an act for my benefit.
He had secretly brought her here anyway, arranging for her to stay in the room right next to ours.
And now Beth had dressed up to look like me just to please him.
I turned away and covered my mouth, fighting back a wave of nausea.
Beth wrapped her arms around his neck and asked coyly, "Want to try something more exciting? After all, Susie is like a dead fish in bed. Isn't it fun when I dress up like her?"
William frowned for a moment, then smiled and lowered his head to kiss her.
"Yes. It's fun. If you behave well, you can have whatever you want."
Beth clung to him, her breathing growing rapid.
"I want you to book an entire island for me too. And I want you to buy me a yacht."
By then, William was completely lost in her.
He couldn't wait to have her.
He agreed without hesitation.
"I'll give you whatever you want."
He kissed Beth as he led her inside.
The door slammed shut.
Suddenly, everything around me went quiet.
His words continued to echo in my ears.
So this was his love.
Something he could endlessly copy and hand out to anyone he pleased.
My heart had gone numb.
I leaned against the wall for a long while, trying to steady myself.
Even though I had seen him cheating with my own eyes yesterday, seeing this scene again today still left my chest aching.
I returned to our room.
My lawyer had already sent over the divorce agreement he had prepared.
I read through the contract until midnight.
All decisions regarding the marital assets would be left entirely to me, including where and how the assets would be transferred.
At the same time, I packaged up the financial records of William's shipping company and sent them out.
His company had been involved in financial fraud and money laundering for years.
I had warned him many times not to do it, but he always told me that his work was none of my business.
So I stopped asking questions.
I arranged for a helicopter to take me off the island tomorrow evening.
Originally, William and I had planned to rent the entire island for a week.
Besides celebrating my birthday, we had planned to relax and enjoy some time away together.
Now, all I wanted was to leave as soon as possible.
After finishing everything, I checked the time on my phone.
Dawn was almost here.
The lights in the room across from ours had been on all night.
William hadn't returned to our room once.
I supposed they had done more than eight times.
But none of that mattered anymore.
Early the next morning, just after I got up, the butler led me to the beach.
As soon as I arrived, a helicopter flew overhead, showering the beach with countless rose petals until the entire shore was covered in a thick carpet of red.
Ten sets of exquisite jewelry were laid out before me.
The onlookers erupted in envious sighs.
I remained completely expressionless.
William approached me holding a bouquet of flowers, a trace of lingering desire still visible on his face.
"Darling, I was busy dealing with work all night. You're not mad at me, are you? I went to all this trouble today to make it up to you. I promised I would, and I always keep my promises."
I knew exactly what these gifts were.
He felt guilty about cheating on me, so he was trying to make it up to me.
The corners of my lips lifted slightly.
"Work comes first. It's fine."
He happily pulled me into his arms.
"I knew you were the most understanding woman."
I gave a bitter, self-mocking smile inside.
Because I was so understanding, I had never checked his phone or questioned him about what he did at the company.
And that was exactly what had given him the chance to cheat on me.
At noon, he prepared lunch.
I sat across from him.
Before all the dishes had even been served, Beth suddenly came rushing over.
She stood beside the dining table, tears still streaking her face.
Her eyes were red as she looked at William.
A flash of panic crossed William's face.
He glanced nervously at me before immediately standing up, his expression turning displeased.
"Didn't I tell you? There's no need to come to me about work in such a hurry!"
"I know, but something urgent happened at the company."
Beth's voice trembled as she turned to explain to me.
"Susie, I'm sorry. There's an urgent matter at work."
I glanced at Beth and sneered.
"It's fine. You two go take care of it."
William turned to me.
"I'll go handle this with her. Enjoy your lunch."
"Okay."
As soon as William left, I pulled the divorce agreement from my bag.
I knew my chance had finally come.
Before leaving the restaurant, I headed straight for the room where they had been together the night before.
The door wasn't fully closed.
I happened to catch Beth clinging to William, trembling as she cried.
William shoved her away in irritation.
"Who gave you the nerve to show up in front of Susie?! Didn't I warn you? You even came crying in front of her. If she finds out, I won't let you off!"
Beth lowered her head and wiped away her tears.
"I know I've caused you trouble by coming here all of a sudden, but I really had no choice. I'm pregnant..."
Beth took a pregnancy test from her bag.
"I suddenly fainted this morning, so I bought a pregnancy test. I'm pregnant. I've been feeling terrible, and I'm afraid something might happen to the baby. That's why I came to find you."
