Chapter 4

816 Words
I stood frozen at the doorway, my chest suddenly tightening until I could barely breathe. I never expected Beth to be pregnant. William and I had been married for seven years, and we had used protection every time we were intimate. It was because, before we got married, he had told me that he didn't want children for the next ten years. He wanted us to enjoy a few more years of being alone together. Back then, I had been so touched by his words that I'd even cried. Only now did I realize the truth. He simply didn't want me to have his child. The moment William heard that Beth was pregnant, the irritation on his face disappeared. He let out a breath and pulled Beth into his arms. "Look at you. It's not that big a deal. Why are you crying like this? I'll take you to get checked out when we get back." As soon as he finished speaking, I stepped forward and knocked on the door. The two of them immediately sprang apart, their faces turning deathly pale. I pretended I hadn't seen a thing and smiled at William. "Honey, didn't you say you wanted to make it up to me yesterday? I've got my eye on a jewelry brand. Buy the whole thing for me. Here's the contract. You just need to sign it." I flipped to the last page. William seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. "No problem." He didn't even look closely. He simply forced a smile and signed his name. I had never asked him for anything, so whenever I did make a request, he always agreed readily. And after what I had just witnessed between him and Beth, all he wanted was for me to leave as soon as possible before I started getting suspicious. I took the divorce agreement back and let my gaze fall on the necklace around Beth's neck. The pendant bore the logo of William's shipping company. The year we first got together, his company had ranked number one in the world in annual revenue. To celebrate, William had personally commissioned someone to design this necklace. There couldn't possibly be a second one in existence. When Beth noticed me staring, she instinctively moved her hair to cover it. "Did your boyfriend give it to you?" William immediately grew tense. I stepped closer and stopped her from covering it. My fingers brushed over the pendant as I smiled faintly. "Your boyfriend has good taste. The necklace is beautiful." Her face instantly turned pale. Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something. I turned to William with a smile. "Darling, you two take your time." William seemed about to say something, but swallowed the words. Something felt wrong to him, yet he couldn't find a single flaw in my behavior. He believed I would never notice details like this. I had always been obedient to him, trusting him without question. As long as he hadn't slipped up, there was no way I would suspect anything between him and Beth. If I had heard what they were saying just now, he thought, I would have already made a scene. At the thought, William's heart sank. After getting the agreement back, I placed one copy in our room. Then I sent it to my lawyer and instructed him to proceed with the transfer of the marital assets. During this time, I took out William's safe. He always carried it with him, and inside were all the documents proving his crimes. Trying to force it open would trigger an explosion, so I entered the password. I took out the files and threw them toward the ceiling. Pages flew through the air, scattering all over the room. Once everything was done, I took my luggage and headed to the open grounds to wait for the helicopter. While I waited, I also sent the location to the international anti-money-laundering organization. Then I received a text message. It was from Beth. Beth: That's right. The necklace was given to me by my boyfriend. I'm pregnant, and my boyfriend is William. If you know what's good for you, divorce him as soon as possible. He's already agreed to divorce you. I stared at the message and let out a cold laugh. Less than two hours later, the helicopter arrived. Just before I boarded, I saw dozens of plainclothes investigators disembarking from a ferry in the distance. At the same time, a massive sum of money was deposited into my account. William jumped out through a rear window. He landed hard on the ground and looked up, meeting my eyes. I gave him a mocking smile. Shock flashed across his face. The wind was too loud for me to hear what he said. Just before takeoff, my phone vibrated. I glanced at the screen. Then I turned off my phone.
