Chapter 6 He Saved Her, Not Me

593 Words
Serena and Elara were wheeled into the emergency room at the same time. When Adrian arrived, he rushed straight to Elara's side. He grabbed the doctor, his face tight with anger. "What happened? Use the best of everything. If anything happens to them, you'll answer for it." A nurse hurried out, flustered. "We have a problem. There's only one set of equipment available right now. One patient is unconscious. The other is pregnant. What should we do?" Adrian froze. He looked from one room to the other and fell into a heavy silence. After a long moment, he finally spoke. "What if… we don't treat the pregnant one first?" The nurse hesitated. "The baby won't survive. We can only try to save the mother." Five more minutes passed under urgent pressure. At last, Adrian made his decision. "Save the unconscious one first." ****** "You're awake. Why didn't you press the call button? I'll get the doctor." Serena lay still, staring at the ceiling. At the nurse's voice, her gaze slowly shifted downward. Her eyes were dark and empty. She said nothing while the doctor examined her. "You'll be fine. You're still young. You can have another child," the nurse said as she wrote something on her chart. "But… why hasn't your husband come? That's really irresponsible." Serena looked at her and realized she was new. "You've had it rough," the nurse went on, talking as she wrote. "I heard you were caught up in that hospital disturbance. Make sure you claim compensation. Another patient was injured too. Everyone in our department is jealous of her." The young nurse kept talking, unaware. "She just woke up, and someone is already pouring money into her care. They hired ten nutritionists just for her recovery. I even heard they bought her favorite yacht so she can go on vacation as soon as she's better." "The rich really live differently. It's unbelievable." She paused, noticing Serena's silence. "I didn't mean to compare you to her. Don't take it the wrong way. I'm sorry." Serena understood. Those so-called rules had always been meant for her. Frugality, responsibility, restraint. They were nothing but a performance. They existed only because Adrian chose when to indulge and when to withhold. And he would never know that she had heard everything. She had heard him choose Elara. She had heard him abandon her. On the operating table, she had felt her child slip away, little by little. She had fought to stay alive, clinging to consciousness with everything she had. The pain in her body and the pain in her heart would never leave her. After she woke, she kept her hand pressed over her stomach as tears ran silently down her face. Memories rose one after another, every word Adrian had ever said to her returning with painful clarity. What they had shared, their love, their engagement, their marriage, and the child they once awaited, had all been beautiful. He was the one who ruined all of it. Adrian rushed over as soon as he heard she was awake. When he saw her, something tightened in his chest. "Serena." "Leave," she said calmly. "Serena, we can have another child. This was an accident. It's going to be okay." He thought she was grieving the loss. "I said leave." She did not want to see him. The sight of him made her feel sick. "Serena, I've already dealt with the person responsible. I got justice for you. Don't worry," Adrian said, his voice tense. He had never seen her like this before.
