She stood behind the secret door in her mate’s office. In a tunnel that she was supposed to know nothing about. Titus had never trusted her with that kind of information. Why should he have? After all she was the reason his fated, mate was killed. Not that he knew that.
She smirked as she listened to her son ruin Titus and that bitches plan. Did Winter really think that she would allow her to be any closer to her mate than she already was. She knew he was sleeping with her. She didn’t care how many times he denied it, she knew he was. They spent entirely too much time alone together. But that’s okay. She had her own fun in the background that Titus didn’t know about. Well, if he did, he certainly didn’t complain about it.
She pressed her ear closer to the door and snickered as she listened to Dean tell his father that he had already mated and marked his chosen mate. The quiet that followed was deafening. She could only imagine the rage that was written all over his face. Plan thwarted. One point goes to the Luna. Zero for the Alpha. The rush of pride that she felt in the moment was indescribable. Then the feeling drained. Did she hear correctly? Gentry. As in Gentry Waters, leader of the Night Coven had entered the office. And he knew Winter? How? She was a nobody just like that trash she called a daughter. No, she had to have heard wrong. There was just simply no way. No one with that kind of power would choose to be with rift raft. Lost in her thoughts and the noise of a struggle on the other side of the door. She didn’t pay attention again until she heard Dean yell, “Dammit.”
She slowly pulled the lever that allowed the wall to slide open. She glanced around and noticed papers littered the office floor. There was an overturned chair. The giddiness in her heart rose. If only she could have watched as Titus struggled against the enforcers as they drug him out in silver chains. She looked at Dean as he stood there, hands on hips. He simply didn’t look happy from his stance. In her opinion everything had gone to plan. She approached him slowly and touched his shoulder.
“Is it done?”
“Yes.”
“Why the face Dean?”
“Did you know that Naomi is the niece of Gentry Waters?”
“What?”. Her surprise was evident. So, she had heard correctly. It was a minor miscalculation in her plan. Dean slowly turned around and sneered at her.
“So, you mean to tell me that you didn’t do your research before you had me take a chosen mate, Mother?”
She stared at Dean for a moment. He looked just like his father. The sneer on his face was a carbon copy of the look his father gave her when she returned home from being with her lover. She tilted her head as the thought occurred that maybe he had known. The sneer was just his way of showing his disgust. Dean interrupted her thoughts. “Mother,” he said harshly.
“Dean, sweety. Let’s think this through. He kept her file locked up with Winters. Naomi is probably his child for all we know. Why else would he be so secretive?”
“How about for her safety since we now know she’s the niece of the High Lord, and a part of this pack.”
“Oh please. He never acted as though she was a pack member.”
Dean stared at his mother as though he had never met her before. His heart dropped. She was making no sense at all. He watched as her eyes shifted between her wolf’s and her own. She was perfectly calm though. This usually only happened when a wolf shifter was angry and on the verge of losing control. She was not. Had his father been right? Did his mother have a touch of madness? Titus had told him repeatedly that if he continued to listen to his mother then she was going to steer him down the wrong path. Is that what had finally happened?
“Did you plant the paperwork like I told you?”
“Yes.”
She giggled like a schoolgirl, as she patted Dean on the chest. “See everything you ever wanted. A mate and the Alpha position.”
“No Mother. What I wanted was a father who wasn’t into the treasonous things that he was. What I wanted was my fated mate, but I couldn’t allow the disrespect that has been thrown at you.”
“Oh, don’t you worry Dean. When you find your fated mate you can simply reject Ashlynn.” Dean simply stared open mouth at his mother.
“What,” she asked confused.
“Are you even listening to what I am saying. I met my fated mate.
“Oh, well then…” Dean cut her off with a low growl.
“My fated mate is Naomi Waters.”. He watched the color drain from Amelia’s face. “So, she can’t very well be father’s daughter as you have been so eloquently spouting all these years. Do you even know for sure if he was sleeping with Winter?”. Amelia’s mouth gaped open and closed like a fish. Not a sound came out.
“So, you have been lying and playing me against my own father and Winter. I have treated her and Naomi like garbage for years based on your word.”. Amelia reach out for Dean. He took two hasty steps back. “Don’t touch me,” he yelled. His hands fisted his hair. “I can’t think clearly when you touch me.”
Her eyes widened. She was losing control over him. His eyes narrowed. He realized how true his words were. Whenever she spoke to him about his father, Winter, or Naomi she always had physical contact with him. Why? He backed up towards the door and grabbed the doorknob.
“Your heart rate has increased. What else have you been lying about? Let me find out.”.
He thought of the paperwork that she had given him against his father and his stomach dropped. “You are no longer to stay in the pack house.”
“But Dean,” she scrambled forward.
“Stop right there. Don’t come any closer.”
Amelia stopped in her tracks and gave him a hurt look. He stared at her for a moment and realized it had no effect on him now. He was a hundred percent sure the effect came with physical contact. “You have the home you shared with father. That is where you will stay from now on. You are released from your Luna duties,” he Alpha commanded. Amelia felt her power wan.
“But why?”
“Because I no longer trust you,” he said harshly and then walked out. She flinched when the door slammed. She had lost her hold on him. Now what was she going to do? Anger surged through her as she jerked the door open and ran down the hall after Dean. All her plans, all the moves she made would not be ruined by this weak little boy.
Dean heard her coming and spun around before he hit the top of the stairs. Amelia had her hands out to push Dean. He side stepped her and her momentum carried her past him. “Dean,” she yelped. Dean’s mouth fell open as he watched his mother fall down the stairs. Every thump that her body made, every bone that he heard break gave him time to harden his heart towards her. She had meant to push him down the stairs. Walking down slowly, Dean took in the awkward angle of her neck. Broken neck. Good thing to, or I would’ve broken it myself he thought as he stood over her body.
