Agnes stared at her husband as Mr Lunan prised her away from the dead body. “Come on, lass, you can do nothing here.” Andrew’s spirit lingered, trying to hold onto Agnes, trying to hell her that he was all right. He could not feel the arrows in his body. He did not know what had happened. Dougie and Peter returned, shocked to see Andrew lying dead. Dougie put a single hand on Agnes’s shoulder. “Go away,” Agnes said, her face white. “Leave me alone.” Peter said nothing; I think Andrew was his first sight of the finality of human death. “Come on, Agnes,” I said, “Let’s get you inside.” Agnes looked at me. “This is your fault, Ellen,” she said with her voice rising wildly. “You killed Andrew.” “Don’t be silly, Agnes.
