25 Sam watched Sarah turn her back and walk away. He wanted to reach out and stop her, but he knew if he did, a man would die. The gunman opposite was a killer. He had proven that, and he would have no compunction about killing again. Sam felt helpless. He was watching someone he was developing real feelings for walk towards an uncertain fate. It was a fate uncertain in its outcome, but not in the promise of its unpleasantness. He shuddered at the thought of it. As he watched Sarah walk slowly away, he lifted his eyes from her back, and looked across at the killer and his prisoner. It was a long way across the open space, but he was sure he could see a lecherous smile spread across the face of the gunman. “You fuckin’ bastard,” Sam said softly. “I’ll kill you before this day is over.” S
