Chapter 11

1206 Words
Monday – 8:03 AM – Campus Walkway The air was unusually cold for late October. Aira walked beside Calix, coffee in hand, a folded sweater draped over her arm. They weren't touching, but their arms kept brushing—accidentally, intentionally. It had become their quiet language. “Long day ahead?” he asked. “Three deadlines, two presentations, and an existential crisis,” she replied dryly. He smiled, offered her a bite of his sandwich. She took it without thinking, without thanking. Comfortable. Familiar. But something inside her was starting to ask: What if this kind of safety doesn’t last? Flashback – Aira, Two Years Ago “People always leave,” she told herself once, watching an old flame walk out the café door. “No one stays when it stops being easy.” That day, she deleted the idea of forever. Now… she wondered if that memory still had the power to shape her choices. 11:14 AM – Calix’s POV – Study Hall Calix sat two tables behind Aira, eyes on his laptop but mind elsewhere. He noticed the way she bit her nail while reading. The way she twisted her bracelet when anxious. The way her foot bounced when trying to stay calm. And the way she hadn’t met his gaze once since this morning. What are you afraid to say, Aira? 1:26 PM – Group Project Meeting (With Mira) “I’m assigning this part to Aira,” the leader said. “I can handle that,” Aira replied, voice even. Mira shot her a glance. She hadn’t said much today either. Later, while packing up, Mira pulled Aira aside. “Everything okay with you and Calix?” Aira blinked. “Yeah. Why?” “You’re quieter. Less… you.” Aira shrugged. “I’m tired.” But even she didn’t believe herself. 3:59 PM – Dorm Balcony Aira stood by the railing, watching clouds gather above the campus. Calix appeared beside her, quiet. “Rain’s coming,” he said. “Yeah.” A beat. “Are we okay?” he asked. She hesitated. “Yeah.” But Calix didn’t let that hang. “Aira… if something’s bothering you, I’d rather hear it than feel it.” That made her look at him. “Why does it scare me that you’re this kind?” she finally said. He blinked. “What do you mean?” “You make it feel so easy to fall,” she whispered. “And I don’t know what to do with that.” 4:35 PM – Aira’s Internal Monologue “Is love supposed to be this quiet? Is it supposed to feel like coming home, instead of fire? And if so… why does part of me still expect to burn?” Evening – Rooftop Garden They didn’t talk for a while. Just sat. Side by side. Letting the wind do the explaining. Eventually, Aira broke the silence. “I don’t want to ruin this.” “You won’t,” Calix replied. “You don’t know that.” “I know you,” he said. “And I know this isn’t about me. It’s about what you’ve survived.” She closed her eyes. “I want to be good at this. I want to stop overthinking everything.” Calix reached for her hand. “Then don’t try to be perfect. Just… be here.” Midnight – Aira’s Journal Entry “He doesn’t ask me to be more. He doesn’t beg me to be less. He just stays. And in that staying… I’m learning how to trust what doesn’t rush.” Tuesday – 6:44 PM – Calix’s Apartment Aira sat on the floor, legs folded under her, as Calix set down a bowl of sinigang and rice on the table between them. “Medyo maasim,” he warned. “I panicked with the mix.” “Good,” she said, smirking. “I like it when it makes my jaw lock.” Calix laughed. “That explains a lot.” They ate in soft conversation—nothing too deep, but full of presence. The kind of talk that made time slow down. 7:31 PM – Living Room After dishes, they settled on the couch. Calix handed her a hoodie—his—and Aira accepted it without question. She curled into the corner of the couch, feet tucked in. “Your place feels different.” “Messy?” “No. Real.” He looked over. “What do you mean?” “I don’t know,” she murmured. “It’s like… walang effort. Pero ang gaan.” “You can stay here when you need to,” he offered without looking at her. Aira blinked. “I wasn’t hinting—” “I know,” he said quickly. “It’s not a condition. It’s just… a truth.” She smiled faintly. “I think I’d like that. Someday.” 8:08 PM – Flashback (Aira, 17 Years Old) She sat at the kitchen table, watching her parents argue again. Her mom’s sinigang untouched. Her dad’s phone lighting up mid-yell. That night, she learned that even meals made with love could go cold without kindness. That night, she promised herself: Never depend on someone to be your home. Back in the Present – Aira’s POV “I used to think love had to prove itself in big ways,” she said suddenly. “Like grand gestures. Begging. Running through airports.” Calix stayed silent. “But I realized something here,” she added. “It’s the quiet things. The soup. The hoodie. The not having to explain why I’m quiet.” She looked at him. “Thank you for giving me that kind of love.” Calix’s POV He didn’t reply right away. Instead, he gently leaned forward, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m not trying to win you,” he whispered. “I’m just trying to stay beside you… until you don’t have to walk scared anymore.” And something in Aira—something hidden, rusted, afraid—unlocked. 9:12 PM – The First True “Us” Moment Aira rested her head on his shoulder again, but this time… it wasn’t hesitant. This time, she exhaled fully. Calix spoke softly, “If you could wish for anything right now, what would it be?” Aira thought for a second. Then: “To stop overthinking. To stop assuming I’m not enough.” Calix paused. “Then let me help you rewrite that voice.” 10:31 PM – Goodnight (Outside Calix’s Apartment) He walked her to the gate. No kisses, no lingering touches. Just fingers brushing and eyes searching. “Text me when you’re inside?” She nodded. “Always.” A beat. Then she said, “Calix?” “Yeah?” “I want to try… being someone who believes in love again.” He smiled. “And I want to be someone who helps you remember how.” Midnight – Aira’s Journal Entry > “There are people who’ll demand your heart all at once. But then there are people who’ll build a chair beside yours and wait… until you’re ready to sit with them. No rush. No fire. Just presence. And in that presence—peace.”
