Chapter 9

1040 Words
Sunday – 6:19 AM – Beach House Balcony The house was still asleep. Aira stood barefoot on the balcony, holding a mug of lukewarm coffee and watching the ocean breathe. Her hair was messy, hoodie zipped halfway, and eyes barely open. She hadn’t slept much. But it wasn’t restlessness. It was… realization. Something inside her felt different. Like something had quietly clicked into place. Or maybe unlocked. She thought back to last night—the game, the almost-kiss, the way Calix looked at her like she wasn’t a maybe anymore. And for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t afraid of wanting more. 7:03 AM – Calix Appears “You’re up early.” His voice came from behind, soft and sleepy. Aira turned. Calix had a hoodie on, hands in his pockets, eyes still adjusting to the light. “Couldn’t sleep,” she said. “Same.” He stepped beside her. They stood in silence, facing the sea. Until she spoke: “About last night…” “You don’t owe me anything,” he said quickly. “I know. But I want to say something anyway.” Calix looked at her. Aira bit her lip. “Thank you… for not rushing me. For waiting. For not making me feel like I have to catch up with my own feelings.” He exhaled slowly. “You don’t. I just want to be where you are.” 9:21 AM – Packing Up Back inside, the group was packing. Sand-covered shoes. Tupperwares missing lids. Someone yelling about a lost charger. It felt loud again. But not suffocating. Calix passed by, holding a bag of leftover snacks. He brushed her hand briefly. Nothing obvious. Nothing anyone else would see. But Aira felt it. That simple gesture. Like we’re okay in a language only they understood. Flashback – Aira’s Journal (Night Before the Retreat) > “Maybe love isn’t what I feared. Maybe it’s what I’ve been aching to remember. I just forgot what it felt like to be held gently.” 2:08 PM – Back at Campus They arrived with tangled hair, mismatched socks, and sunburnt cheeks. Calix helped unload the van. Aira stayed back, half watching him and half wondering: What now? This wasn’t just a weekend anymore. It wasn’t just a vacation. Something had changed. But would they carry it into the week? 3:12 PM – Dorm Room (Aira & Mira) Mira tossed herself onto the bed. “That was the most peaceful beach trip I’ve ever had.” Aira smiled, kicking off her shoes. “Except for the part where you and Calix almost made the stars jealous,” Mira teased. Aira rolled her eyes, but didn’t deny it. Mira leaned up on one elbow. “Hey. You okay?” “I think I am,” Aira said honestly. “For the first time… I’m not scared to feel something.” “Then maybe you’re not just healing,” Mira said. “Maybe you’re finally choosing.” Aira blinked. And nodded. Monday – 10:46 AM – Library Corner Aira sat at their usual table, flipping through notes half-heartedly. Calix was running late—an org meeting, he said. Her eyes wandered to her phone screen… then to the banana bread recipe saved in her gallery. She smiled faintly. Last night, she opened it again. Not because she planned to bake. Just because she remembered. That he remembered. Maybe it’s my turn to remember something for him. 4:08 PM – Student Center Kitchenette No one was there. Just the quiet hum of the fridge and the low tick of the wall clock. Aira pulled out a small container from her tote—inside were chocolate clusters she made last night. They weren’t perfect. Some were uneven. Some too crunchy. But they were made with someone specific in mind. She left the container on the table where Calix usually sat during late breaks. On top: a sticky note. > “No reason. Just wanted you to feel thought of, too. – A” She left before anyone could see her. 5:12 PM – Calix’s POV Calix spotted the container right away. He froze for a second, smile slowly blooming as he read the note. He opened the lid—his favorite. He didn’t need to guess who made them. He just sat down, took a bite, and closed his eyes for a moment. > “So this is what it feels like… when the person you’re falling for starts falling back.” 7:45 PM – Dorm Balcony “Ano masasabi mo sa baking skills ko?” Aira asked through the phone, playful. Calix chuckled. “10/10. Even the lopsided ones.” “So… you got them.” “I did. Thank you.” Silence. Then Aira asked, “Did it make you feel thought of?” Calix paused. “Yeah. It really did.” “I want you to feel that more often,” she said softly. “Not just today.” Calix blinked. “Aira…” “No pressure,” she added quickly. “I just… I don’t know how to do this perfectly. But I think I’m ready to try.” His voice was lower now. “That means more to me than you know.” Later That Night – Their Usual Spot (Bench by the Garden) They met without planning to—just instinct. Aira sat beside him, tucking her knees up. Calix handed her a bottled iced coffee. “You remembered,” she smiled. “Your Monday night ritual,” he shrugged. They sat in silence again, but this time it felt… different. Not unsure. Not hesitant. Just comfortable. Then, out of nowhere, Aira said, “If I kissed you right now… would you stop me?” Calix looked at her, stunned for a second. “No,” he said. “I wouldn’t.” Aira leaned in, rested her head on his shoulder. Not quite a kiss. But close. Then: “Maybe next time,” she whispered. And he smiled. Because he knew—there would be a next time. Midnight – Aira’s Journal Entry > “It’s not a big leap. Just a quiet shift. From protecting myself… to believing I deserve to be held.”
