Chapter 7

Saturday – 3:12 PM – Campus Café The café was almost empty. Soft jazz music filled the corners. Outside, the sky was grey—hinting rain. Aira sat at their usual table, fingers wrapped around her cup. Calix was a few minutes late, but she didn’t mind. At least, she thought she didn’t. Because ever since she said those words— > “I’m learning how to love you”— the quiet between them felt different. Not awkward. Just… charged. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for what came next. 3:21 PM – Calix Arrives “Sorry, traffic sa gate,” Calix said, sliding into the seat across her. “It’s okay,” she replied. He smiled at her, the way he always did—light, steady, patient. But Aira’s heart was racing. She didn’t know what to do with his gaze anymore. It made her feel seen. Too seen. They made small talk—class updates, Mira’s latest gym obsession, org events. But her responses were clipped. Her thoughts kept circling. What now? Did I say too much? Is he expecting something from me? Aira’s POV (Internal Monologue) > “He’s still him. But I don’t feel like me. Or maybe… this is the real me. The me who wants more. The me who’s terrified that I actually want this to work.” 3:45 PM – Emotional Shift Calix noticed. “You okay?” he asked, voice gentle. Aira hesitated. “Yeah. Just tired.” He didn’t push. He just nodded, and stirred his coffee. But the silence between them had weight now. Not heavy with pressure—but with possibility. And that scared her. 4:02 PM – Rain Begins As they stepped out of the café, rain greeted them—soft and steady. Calix opened his umbrella. “Hatid na kita?” Aira shook her head, forcing a smile. “Kaya ko. Gusto ko muna maglakad.” Calix paused. “You sure?” “Yeah,” she said quickly. Too quickly. He didn’t stop her. Just handed her the umbrella without a word. And as she walked away, heart thudding, she realized— > She was running again. But not from him. From herself. 4:10 PM – Calix’s POV (Watching Her Walk Away) He didn’t follow. He wanted to. But he knew what this was. He had seen this kind of quiet before—in his sister, in his mom, in the mirror. It wasn’t rejection. It was retreat. > The kind you take when your heart needs to breathe before it says yes to something big. He sat back down inside the café, alone, and took out his sketchpad. And there— he drew her walking in the rain, umbrella tilted, head slightly down. Still strong. Still soft. Still the girl he was slowly, quietly falling in love with. 4:37 PM – Aira’s Journal Entry (Dorm Room) > “Why is it that the closer I get to something real, my instinct is to pull away? To protect. To pause. To prepare for the fall before it even happens?” “He didn’t chase me. And weirdly, that made me want to turn back.” 7:12 PM – Text Exchange (Nighttime) CALIX: > Hindi ko tinanong kanina. Pero if ever gusto mong magkwento… I’m here. No pressure. No fixing. Just… listening. AIRA: > Thank you. Sorry kung weird ako kanina. CALIX: > You're not weird. You’re just real. And I’m not going anywhere. Sunday – 10:42 AM – Dorm Garden Area The sun was soft, the kind that didn’t hurt to look at. Aira sat on the grass with her knees pulled in, phone beside her, unread. She hadn’t messaged Calix again after last night’s quiet exchange. Not because she didn’t want to. But because she did. Too much. And that was the problem. Mira Joins Her “Alam mo,” Mira said, sitting beside her without warning, “hindi lahat ng love kailangan ng grand gesture. Minsan ‘yung hindi umaalis kahit tahimik ka—that’s the loudest kind.” Aira sighed. “I think I’m falling.” “Not news.” “I mean… really falling.” Mira smiled. “Then let him catch you.” “But what if he doesn’t?” Mira looked her straight in the eyes. “Then at least you flew for a while.” 4:17 PM – Rooftop (Aira & Calix) She found him sketching again—his safe space. He looked up, smiled slightly. “Hey.” “Hey,” she echoed. “Okay ka lang?” She sat beside him. “Not really. But I wanted to see you.” That was enough for him. They sat in silence. Wind brushing past. The city humming below. The Past, Revisited “Can I ask you something?” Aira said softly. “Anything.” “Bakit parang… ang steady mo?” Calix laughed quietly. “Sa loob lang ako magulo.” She glanced at him. “Actually…” he paused. “Gusto mong malaman bakit sobrang ingat ako sayo?” Aira nodded. Calix looked ahead, eyes distant. “My dad left when I was nine. Sabi niya, babalik siya. He never did. I think that’s why… I stay now. Even when people leave. Parang sinumpa ko sarili ko—hindi ako magiging katulad niya.” Aira held her breath. “I don’t want to be someone na minahal mo lang sa simula,” he added. “Gusto ko… kahit sa gitna, kahit sa dulo… nandun pa rin ako.” Evening – 6:42 PM – Dorm Steps They sat on the steps outside the dorm, watching the sky dim. “I’m scared,” Aira whispered. “Of me?” Calix asked gently. “No. Of what I’m starting to feel.” He didn’t reply immediately. Then, “Ako rin.” She looked at him. He was already looking at her. Eyes full of quiet hope. And just for a second—he leaned in. So close. Their foreheads touched. And in that almost-kiss, she felt everything: the weight of her past, the warmth of his presence, the gravity of a heart learning to trust again. But she pulled back—not out of rejection, but reverence. “I’m not ready,” she whispered. Calix smiled, brushing a hair from her cheek. “Then I’ll wait. Not for your timing. But for your peace.” Aira’s Journal – 11:08 PM > “We almost kissed. But that wasn’t the important part. What mattered… was that he didn’t flinch when I pulled away. He smiled. Stayed. And for the first time, my heart didn’t break from what didn’t happen— it bloomed from what almost did.”
