I was reading at the table when he came in.
"Some girls want math and Portuguese lessons. You're good at that. I'm helping the boys, but I don't want to teach the girls. That could cause problems."
At least in that, he was still the same. Alemão avoided anything that could be misinterpreted, especially with girls.
"And what level are they at?" I asked, lifting my eyes from the book.
"I don't know. The boys are at very different levels. Some understand well, but others are very behind. I'm starting with the basics, asking them to memorize the multiplication table. That's what can be done, math expressions, fractions, slightly more complex operations."
"And where are these classes happening?" I asked.
"I'm using a vacant house... but you stay here... Here. You can use the table.
