I pulled an all-nighter. I took care of the Captain's business with Lucas and João, and when I finally got home, the day had already fully dawned. The sun illuminated the house, and the smell of fresh coffee came from the kitchen. It felt like stepping back into the past, to a routine that no longer existed.
Elize stood there, her back to me, stirring something on the stove. Even without seeing her face, I realized she had been crying. It was something in the way she held her shoulders tense, as if she were carrying the weight of the world.
"Elize." I called, trying to soften my voice.
She didn't turn around, continued stirring the coffee, but replied,
"I'm okay."
