Chapter 3—The Man Who watched From The Dark

780 Words
(First Person POV – Elara) I did not sleep that night. How could I sleep when I kept thinking about what happened in the forest? Every time I closed my eyes I saw those eyes again. The glowing eyes in the forest. The way they stopped when he stepped forward. The way even danger itself backed away from him. Worse, the way he looked at me after. Like I was something he already knew about. I sat with my back against a tree hugging my knees to my chest. The forest was quieter now. It did not feel safe. It never felt safe. I kept thinking about what he said to me. Someone you should not trust. That should have been enough to make me run away. I did not run. Because something about him confused me more than it scared me. He did not attack me. He did not report me. He did not even ask me questions like everyone Instead he saved me. That did not make sense in a world like mine. People do not help strangers for no reason. Especially not people like him. I exhaled slowly. "Think, Elara " I whispered to myself. "Think properly." My thoughts kept getting all mixed up. I did not even know his name. Yet I could not shake the feeling that I had seen him before. Somewhere. A memory I could not remember. A voice in my mind tried to warn me. Leave while you still can. My body did not move. Because for the time since everything fell apart I was not completely alone. That terrified me in a different way. Second Person POV – The Forest Watches You You are not asleep. You never really are. The forest is around you like something alive something very old. Every sound means something if you know how to listen. You hear her. The girl, Elara. She thinks she is alone. You know better. You always know better. You watch Elara from the dark, where the light can not reach. She sits under the tree, small and shaking trying to pretend she is not afraid. Fear is all around her like a smell. Fresh. Raw. Uncontrolled. You notice everything about Elara. The way her fingers shake when she thinks no one sees. The way her eyes keep looking around the forest searching for things she can not name. The way she forces herself to breathe as if that will make her stronger. It does not. Not yet. You move slightly careful not to make a sound. Elara is not ready. Not for what Elara is. Not for what's coming. A branch creaks somewhere behind you. You do not turn. You already know who it is. Another watcher. Another one sent to observe Elara. They think Elara is dangerous. You almost smile at that. They have no idea what danger really looks like. A low voice speaks behind you. "Elara is unstable." You do not answer immediately. Instead you keep watching Elara. Because Elara just stood up. Slowly. Like Elara felt something change in the air. Interesting. You finally speak without turning. "Elara is awakening." A pause. "That is what makes Elara unstable " the voice replies. You finally glance back slightly. "Or powerful " you say. Silence follows. The forest seems to get tighter around that silence. Then the voice asks carefully "Do we report this?" You look back at Elara. Elara has started walking into the forest now. Not running. Not hiding. Searching. You answer calmly. "No." A beat. "Then what do we do?" You watch Elara disappear between the trees. For the first time you allow yourself to think it fully. "Elara survives " you say. ". Elara does not." A pause. Then you add quietly "Either way Elara changes everything." (First person pov – Elara) I did not know I was being watched. I did not know that every step I took was already being measured. All I knew was that I could not stay still anymore. Something inside me was pulling me forward. Not fear. Not curiosity. Something deeper. Like my body was responding to something my mind had not understood yet. I stood slowly brushing dirt off my clothes. The forest felt different now. Heavier. Like it was holding its breath. I looked around more. Nothing. No movement. No sound. I had learned something tonight. Silence did not mean safety. I started walking. And as I moved deeper, into the forest I whispered to myself "If I am going to survive this…" I paused. My fingers curled slightly. "…Then I need to understand what I am." Somewhere far behind me Someone was still watching Elara.
