9. Narissa

I walked outside to the front door with Shia while Cameron tailed behind us, probably picking clues. I rolled my eyes. I got the ring which was a much bigger clue than whatever he managed to find out. Some human scent that's all. Yeah right. We all got the point that this happened because of a human but he thinks he just discovered Narnia. Great. Shia walked next to me, her head bowed in deep thought. I felt so horrible about what happened to her. She lost her grandmother and didn't even get to mourn the loss without my messed up life interfering in hers. I grabbed her hand and pulled her to a stop when she just kept on walking and walking. She turned to look at me, her eyes sad. "Hey, it's okay. We'll find whoever did this okay?" I squeezed her hand gently. Cameron passed by, saying, "Or the whoever's right here yet we can't see it." My mouth dropped open. Did he just accuse me of doing it?! Shia's eyebrows drew together, "She didn't do it so stop accusing her." He shrugged, "Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. Think about it Shia. She's a human and she was here when it happened." "You i***t!" I almost yelled. "I was with you two the whole time! Who the hell made you a warlock?" My tone had become incredulous. "I have every reason to doubt you missy. You could've done. You're the human here." He reasoned. I turned to Shia, who was barely listening, "Can humans kill warlock's too? Cause I sure would love to wedge a sword in his chest." "Enough you guys. We both know she didn't do it. She couldn't have. Let's just go back to our houses and talk about this in the morning." Her voice sounded tired. I nodded and glaring at Cameron, walked on the sidewalk. After about a minute, I heard Cameron run up to me. "Why are you here?" I groaned. "Hey, I didn't want to but Shia asked me to. She said something about you being attacked by armed people tonight and she didn't feel comfortable leaving you alone." He replied coolly, kicking a stone. I stopped and looked at him with my eyes narrowed, "Who's to say you wouldn't try anything?" "I would but I'm not in the mood for human barbeque tonight," he smirked. I rolled my eyes but let him take me home. After I reached my front door, I turned around to look at him. "Thanks for uh, walking me home," I mumbled uncomfortably, shifting from one foot to another. He shrugged, "Nothing out of the extraordinary for me. I usually protect my preys before I eat them." I gawked at him, "So you really eat humans?" His eyes twinkled, "Sometimes. But today's not non-veg day for me." And with that he disappeared from sight. When I stepped inside, my father and his girlfriend were already standing at the foot of the stairs in their night clothes. I rolled my eyes again. "Where have you been?! Do you know how worried I was?!" Father shouted, his hands shoved into the pockets of his robe. "I just got caught up with a friend," I replied. Beside him Jane looked worried too. "You should've at least called! When Jane went outside and spotted that pocket knife and your lipstick on the ground we lost our minds!" He continued. I raised my eyebrows, "Jane spotted it?" "Look at her! How can you be so brazen Narissa! I had to ask Detective Dylan to look for you!" He was hyperventilating now. Jane hurriedly quietened him down. "Hey, give her sometime she'll explain what happened. You have to stop or you'll blood pressure will shoot," she whispered. I groaned and stalked past the two of them and up to my room. Why was he so worried anyway? Doesn't he know worrying is going to increase his blood pressure problems? I plopped down on the bed when the door opened. I didn't bother to look who. "Here," came Jane's soft voice as she sat down next to me on the bed holding a first aid kit. "I saw a cut on your arm. Let me bandage it." A cut? I pulled up my sleeve slightly and there it was, about an inch long cut with the blood dried. I didn't protest as she applied the antiseptic on my arm with a cotton. The two of us sat in silence, something I never imagined we'd be doing. "You know, he loves you alot," she whispered. I didn't say anything as a sign to let her continue. "He was very worried when I returned with the knife and lipstick. He even wanted to call the deputy head chief of the Police Department but I had to talk him out of it and settle for Dylan," she wrapped the white band-aid around the cut and taped it up. I just stared at her. She gathered her things and stood up, "Don't worry him again, Nessi. He loves you alot and cares for you more than himself. He's ready to lose himself just so you can find yourself." "Why are you," I began and she stopped at the door, "dating him?" She didn't turn around, "You really want to know? Do you think, like everybody else, that I stuck around just for money?" When I didn't answer, she sighed somewhat sadly, "No Nessi. I love him." She opened the door, "I'll have the maid send something to eat to your room. You must be hungry after all those drinks you had." And she was gone. I plopped down on the bed, covering my face with a pillow. I had enough of pixies and warlocks and humans for one night. The next morning, I climbed down the stairs and saw Dad sitting at the breakfast table. I remembered what Jane said last night and instantly began feeling guilty. He must've been really worried for me because he looked like he'd aged 10 years since last night. I walked up to and sat down on a chair. He looked at me briefly before returning to reading the morning paper. I cleared my throat, "I uh- I apologize for my behaviour last night Dad. I should've been more thoughtful." He put down his paper and looked at me slightly surprised, "Did I just hear you apologize?" I nodded. It was time to take responsibility for my uncalled for behaviour. "Yup. I really am remorseful for the way I acted." He thinks for a while before nodding, "Apology accepted. Now would you like to tell me what happened and how'd you get that cut?" I told him everything that happened, leaving out the whole Shia being a pixie, the murder and professor Cameron being a warlock part. I wondered if Dylan told him what he saw. He was angry that a couple of muggers even dared to sneak into the area but I told him to let it go. I mean, it could happen to anyone right? Jane walked over with a dish of fresh waffles and pancakes in her hand. She smiled when she saw me. "Nessi! Have some breakfast with us before you leave for school." When I didn't snark at her or pass a sarcastic comment, Dad seemed pleasantly surprised and happy. I was trying to wrap my finger around the fact that he cared for her and hating on her wasn't going to bring my mother back. She laid the stuff infront of me and then took her seat beside dad's. The new maid Jia walked out carrying a jug of juice and some glasses. I quickly shoved my breakfast in my mouth before dashing out after bidding goodbye to both of them. Dad seemed like he could probably float from happiness from the change I was showing. I quickly ran over to my car and got in. I was supposed to meet Shia at her house five minutes ago. Anyways, it took me about 10 minutes to get to her house. She was standing at the door, a frown on her face. I pulled over and honked the horn, grabbing her attention. She got in and closed the door, sighing. "What happened?" I asked putting the car into ignition and pulling out of her driveway. The tree in her front yard looked eerily like a zombie and I wouldn't be surprised if it came to life and winked at me. "Detective Jerkface dropped by," she mumbled, slumping in her seat. "He did? Why?" I asked, surprised. "He still hasn't gotten over what happened yesterday. He thinks I made Grammy's body disappear or something." "But since the killer is human, don't you think he can help us?" "What? No!" She turned to look at me. "It means we'll have to tell him what I truly am and that isn't happening." "But you told me," I stated as a matter-of-factly. "That's different. No one's going to believe you if you tell them what I am," she said. I looked at her, slightly offended. "Sorry," she replied sheepishly. "But think about it. Would anyone?" I thought for a minute and then eventually shook my head, "Nah, you're right." "But with the detective, he seems like an influential person. What if he leads someone to me? I don't believe him at all," she muttered. I knew Detective Dylan. He was actually a family friend of my father's. But I couldn't really guarantee the way he'd behave once he found out the truth. So I just stayed quiet as I drove both of us to school. When we entered class, professor Cameron was already there with his briefcase and everything. I rolled my eyes when I saw him. He just kept his face normal but I could practically see him roll his hazel eyes in his head. The day at school passed by pretty stressful. I didn't feel anything when I saw Will. It was as if he didn't have an effect on me anymore. Marinna was her usual self, walking about with her posey and everything but that didn't matter to me either. All I could think about was Shia's grandmother and how big of a suffering she must be going through even though she kept saying she was okay. She wasn't and I knew that. I wouldn't be either if I'd been in such a situation. After the last bell rang, I walked over to my car and decided to drop by Shia's tonight. She needed all the support I could give her even though it was so little. When I got to her house, around 7, it was dark. The sun set really early in Suncliff even though the town was practically named after it. I switched off the radio where the host had been going on about the boring party elections and had a senator on podcast. I really needed to buy that new aux cable. I walked upto her front door which was opened by none other than that hazel eyed, human eating weirdo. "I'm here to see Shia," I said, already impatient. Not waiting for a reply I pushed past him and went inside. "Well hello to you too," he muttered behind me, closing the door. I walked into the lobby and spotted her slumped on the couch with her back to me, examining the ring. "Hey," I said softly sitting next to her. "Found anything?" She shook her head, "This worn out ring doesn't look like it'll help at all. I can't pick up a single clue and so can't he." She motioned to Cameron who was already perched on a beanie. I took the ring from her hand and looked at it. It's band was made of metal, a good heavy metal, with a single red ruby in the middle. Although it was already worn out, its making told me it was expensive. Two initials were carved underneath the stone. C.A I frowned, "What do you think these intials mean?" "I have no idea," she shrugged, her eyes misty. I put the ring on the table and turn to her, "So what now? Aren't you going to go after the killer?" "I want to but," she sighed. "I'm supposed to leave soon. My punishment's almost over and-" "Wait," I cut her off. "What punishment?" Cameron had by now wandered over to the kitchen. Shia told me everything about her past and what happened to her. I just listened to it quiet dumbfounded by the King's punishment and that too, to a girl so little. "Your king's a douchebag," I said, shaking my head. She shrugged, "He thought I was a threat to all of pixie-kind," she frowned at the word. Cameron seemed more interested in the ring handed to him by Shia. He spun it around. "This ring belongs to someone in close ties with the Civil Alliance party," he informed. I raised my eyebrows, "How do you know that?" "The intials C.A engraved at the bottom," he stated, turning it over. I wondered how I didn't pick up on that. "Can you find out who?" Shia asked. He frowned, "My powers are weakened by a sea witch. She cast a spell on me, stripping me of the strength to use my power in its full potential. That is the reason I haven't been able to help you except for picking up scents." It was time for me to narrow my eyes at him, suspiciously. "What did you do?" He stared at me blankly, "What?" "What did you do to get cursed?" My tone was accusatory now. He scratched his head, "Summer-fling went wrong." He admitted nervously. I slapped my knee and looked at Shia who simply shook her head. "I say we can't trust him. Kick him out," I eyed him confidently while he threw me a dirty look. "You know we can't do that," she sighed. "Do you know how to lift the curse?" "Yes. But only the witch herself can do that. We'll have to go to her." Shia nodded and looked at me, "You in?" I could've said no. I could've stepped back. But as much as Shia, even I wanted to help find her Grammy's killer because she saved my life. I wouldn't even be alive if it hadn't been for her. I nodded. "I'm in."
