I didn't feel the whole 'your life flashes before your eyes' moment. It was as if my death was standing there. Right there. Infront of me.
It all seemed so surreal.
It all seemed like an illusion. Infact, it didn't feel real. But I breached myself against the attack. I couldn't do anything and I had tried my best to protect myself.
I waited and waited but it never happened.
I moved my arm away from my eyes only to shut them tightly again because I nearly went blind because of a sparkling bright light. Slowly, I opened them again and to my utter shock, leather jacket's hand was frozen mid air, a sparkling yellow ring of smoke around it.
It was if he was handcuffed to air by a yellow colored ring of air.
He was staring sideways and when I followed his gaze my eyes nearly bulged out of there sockets.
Standing in the middle of the road, with blonde hair and wearing a tiny shimmering frock, was Shia.
She looked furious as she had leather jacker hung mid air with his knife. I saw her eyes move and the yellow ring of smoke dragged him away from me. Each time he struggled, the ring got tighter, making him cry out in agony. It lifted him high in the air and pretty soon his feet were dangling a good fifty inches off the ground.
The other ran out of the forest and onto the scene that played out infront of me. They stood staring at Shia dumbfounded and mentally deciding whether they should pounce or just leave their boss like this.
They decided otherwise though and quickly shuffled forward to attempt to stop Shia from whatever magic she was performing.
But of course, magic beats all.
She turned around and pointed a stick like thing in their direction. I stared at it baffled. Where did that come from? Wasn't she using her eyes and fingers to conjour these weird sort of shapes and stuff? What the heck was happening? Was I real?
The two of them flew in different directions and fell after their backs hit the trunk of the tall trees. The bomber jacket guy ran off and the other fell unconscious.
Leather jacket's screams were now beginning to get more shrill and panicked. But since he had on a face mask they were pretty much muffled. Shia walked forward and for the first time I got to see her face.
It was sparkly. As if she'd slapped on a huge amount of glitter on it.
Her ears were pointed and there were sparkles on her eyes and around her lips.
If I wasn't so shocked I'd say she looked absolutely ethereal.
"You dare to cause unrest, you filthy human!" She yelled. "You've been so bad so you must be punished."
Saying that, she raised the wand and the ring dragged leather jacket and flung him towards the forest. His screams faded away and the sound of a body rolling suggested he'd either fallen down hill or rolled into a ditch.
I turned to look at the other one of his allies but that dude must've woken up and ran for his life.
Turning my attention back to Shia I just stared at her with my mouth dropped open like a fish.
She moved forward and offered me a hand, "Come on. They're not coming now, I think."
Nodding and still very much in shock, I took her hand and stood up. Before I could stop myself, the words flew out of my mouth, "What are you?!"
She didn't look offended but she eyed me curiously, "Nessi, can you keep a secret?"
***
"You're a WHAT?!" I screamed so loudly all the bats probably flew away.
Shia just c****d her head to the side and studied me quietly. She had an annoying glow radiating off her but her blonde hair looked really cool.
She'd told me her secret about fifteen minutes ago but all I could do was shout only one sentence every five seconds. I think she was getting extremely bored or creeped out by now.
"Okay, okay," I took deep breathes to calm myself down, "let me get this straight. You, Shia, a girl from my History class, are a pixie." I said slowly.
She nodded with every word quiet patiently, "Pretty much exactly, yeah."
"So this means... you are not... human?" I nearly choked on the last part as my eyes travelled up her very human body.
She scratched her hair with the stick or "wand", as she called it, "Well yes but technically no. I mean," she gestured to her figure. "We look like humans but infact... are not." She replied slowly.
I looked at her before wheezing out laughter, "I get it. I got it now. This is all a PRANK! You're playing one on me as a welcome back surprise by the rest of the students." By now, my voice had turned into manic laughter.
Shia looked at me with a weird expression before slowly shaking her head, "Um, no. This is the truth. I am a pixie."
My laugh died down then and there and I took her appearance in once more. Her blonde hair glowed unnaturally and her dress shimmered too. She didn't have any wings but her eyes had changed to a glistening blue colour. Her nose was normal but her eyes were very slightly pointed at the top. That detail was so small you couldn't really tell unless you paid extra attention.
Awkward silence befell us as I just stared at her in curiosity. She squirmed slightly under my gaze and quickly waved her wand over her head, returning back to her normal state.
All the stuff I had always watched in movies, I saw them happen in real life. I gaped in amazement as a glow overtook her completely covering her. When it all fell away she had her chestnut brown locks again and her clothes changed to casual sweats and a sleeveless crop top.
"I really do love the comfortable clothes you humans have! That dress earlier was so itchy," she muttered rubbing her arms.
"Wait wait wait. If you're a pixie," she nodded, "how come you're here disguised like a human?"
She sighed, "I was banished."
"From where?"
"Pixie Island."
"Woah! So you're from a place called Pixie Island. Why is that? Couldn't think of a name?" I joked, apparently still trying to calm my own nerves down.
"No," she replied hotly. "It's been called like that for centuries."
"Okay okay. But why were you banished? And why did you reveal yourself to me when you've been hiding your true form from everybody else?"
The fact had started bothering me right after I finally accepted that she indeed was a pixie. If she had stayed hidden from everybody else, why would she show herself to me? Especially since she met me like a day ago.
She shrugged. "I haven't really thought about why I was hiding myself from everyone. My grammy always tells me to keep it a secret, the King punished me for "trying" to reveal our island but-" she scratched her hair in confusion, "even I don't know why."
I narrowed my eyes at her, "But aren't you anxious that you'll get caught?"
"I am! But it's more of a habitual thing." She explained.
"Then, why'd you reveal yourself to me? And how did you know I was in trouble?"
She smiled shyly, "The bartender at the bar you were just in told me. He's a pixie too and he picked up my aura from your body. So, he thought I was a friend of yours."
"Oh," I mumbled. He was a nice chap. Maybe he called her to help me since I seemed drunk to him.
Though, looking at Shia infront right now it felt like I was still drunk.
"To tell you the truth," she continued. "You are the first human who has stood up for someone. And honestly, it felt like you were different. I've been living in this realm for more than a decade and you're the only person who was gutsy enough to stand up to Marinna and her unfairness. So, I wanted to risk it and reveal to you who I really am. Just to, you know, anticipate your reaction. Are you shocked? Scared?"
I wanted to tell her how light-headed I felt but since she'd decided to trust me with her real identity, I decided to act a little cool.
"Sure," my voice came out squeaky.
Smooth.
She laughed and extended her hand out to me, "Come on. I'll show you what I can do."
I felt a bit reluctant but then again, she'd just saved my life from those hooligans. I don't know, maybe I could trust her.
I reached forward and placed my hand in her's. Her hand was so warm and it sent a tingling sensation up my arm.
Her feet began to lift up and pretty soon, she was half floating in air. My eyes widened in panic.
"No! Shia what are you- Ahhh!" I shrieked because she lifted my off the ground with her and now I was just hanging mid-air, a good ten feet above the ground.
"Please don't drop me, don't drop me!" I yelled over and over, my eyes closed and grabbing onto her hand for dear life.
She laughed, "Even if I let you go my magic won't let you drop don't worry."
I nodded, still not opening my eyes.
Shia laughed again, "I won't. Just open your eyes now."
Slowly, I opened my eyes.
And gasped.
I was floating mid-air, about 50 feet above the ground. Shia held onto my hand and I stared in wonder at the city lights.
"Wow. It's all so beautiful!" I exclaimed.
She began flying and pulling me along. The night breeze blew through my long hair as she veered me around the city. I felt so light and easy. As if there wasn't a thing in the world I had to be sad or worried about.
And coming to terms with the fact that she was a pixie was becoming easier too.
"You having fun?!" She shouted over the strong gush of the wind.
"Yeah! It's great!" I shouted back. "But can't people see us?" Didn't want her to get caught.
"Nah, they can't!" She shouted back. "I cast a disappearance spell over us!"
I giggled, that too, reluctantly. It was so unreal, all of it. It was as if I was in one of those amusement park games. We sored over the entire city, the small lights looking absolutely beautiful and the people looked like teeny tiny ants.
After she flew around some more with me hanging by her hand, she landed us in her own backyard.
I dropped to the ground and squealed in disbelief.
It took me a few minutes to calm down but I eventually did. Taking in a deep breathe, I stood up to face my 'new pixie friend'.
"Wooh. That was great-"
"Ssh!" She cut me off. "Keep it down. My grammy's in there. If she finds out you're here, I'm going to be in so much trouble!"
I nodded.
She pointed at a tree and crept towards it, motioning me to follow. Confused, I followed her and found myself at the base of a very dark tree, which looked very old too.
"What are we looking at?" I whispered.
She took out her wand, from God knows where, and moved its tip. A moment later, the low hanging vines moved aside and a shockingly small treehouse formed behind the leaves and between the branches.
My mouth formed an 'o' as Shia dragged me inside. It took one poof! and we were inside.
My mouth dropped open at how huge this thing was from the inside. Outside, it looked like even a full leg of mine wouldn't fit in.
And I'm 5'5.
That's some serious Harry Potter magic there.
"Here check these out." Shia said excitedly, pulling out a couple of fat books and small pots and boxes and pouches.
I grabbed a thick book with something scribbled on it in French.
"What's this?"
"Oh, that's my grammy's book of spells. It's in French because her mother was from France but her father was an English pixie."
"You guys have that?" I asked in amazement.
She nodded. But before I could hear her reply, we heard a sound coming from the dark corner. Shia got up to see and I hid behind her, too scared to look.
It could be another creature and after tonight, I wouldn't be suprised if an aligator in a tuxedo walked out of there smoking a blunt.
Shia drew her wand out and threw some more sparkles. They lightened up and pretty soon caught a human figure.
After a second, the light drew aside, revealing professor Cameron from school.
What's he doing here?!
My mouth dropped open but Shia didn't seem to shocked that he was here of all people, "What are you?"
He stepped forward, hands shoved in his sweats. He still managed to look hot despite being in a simple tee and sweatpants, his face covered by those thick rimmed glasses.
"What are you and how'd you get in here?!" Shia shouted again, her hair turning blonde again and her ears pointed.
Her wand was still raised infront of her like her shield.
Good idea to reveal yourself infront of the imposter. I rolled my eyes.
Cameron's eyes turned fiery hazel all of a sudden.
Great. So he's non-human too? What if I'm an opposum?!
I frantically looked at my hands but they were non-furry, human hands. Shaking my head, I turned my attention back to the two of them.
Cameron deflected Shia's wand with a flick of his hand. She gasped in shock while I searched for an escape route.
"Y-you're a-a.....warlock?!" She yelled.
He smirked and nodded. "Took you long enough."
I sighed, feeling dizzy. What the heck was happening?
"But why are you here? And why did you hide yourself from me if you knew me?" She questioned next.
I tapped her shoulder, my breathe still caught in my throat from all the sudden shocks and revelations. She turned to look at me.
"Mind if-if I sit down for a bit? This is too much for me." I mumbled, my head light.
She nodded and I collapsed on one of the bean chairs.
Cameron opened his mouth to reply but a loud scream interrupted him this time.
I frowned not knowing who it was but Shia realized immediately.
"Grammy!" She shouted and disappeared in a puff of yellow smoke and sparkles.
Panicked, I looked at Cameron who seemed to have noticed me for the first time. He frowned.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, his tone accusatry.
"I-I'm her friend." I fumbled.
My attention turned back to Shia while Cameron eyed me suspiciously. "We should go in and see what happened!" I shouted when he didn't move.
"Right." He said, as if implying that he'd deal with me later.
He raised his hand and I felt a weird sort of feeling, as if my body was jelly and I was dropping into nowhere. When the white haze disappeared from my eyes, I found myself in Shia's living room.
The sight infront was horrific.
Shia sat wailing in front of who looked like her grandmother, who had a huge metal sword sticking out of her chest.
She'd been stabbed in the heart.
