Derek wasn't happy with the way I had fallen in the presence of the others. He gave them a stern look as soon as he flew me back up, to the top.
"How could you let this happen?" He asked James in particular, in a highly agitated tone.
James hesitated in replying, not knowing when I had wandered away.
I quickly feigned pain in my ankle. "Ow! Oh my God it hurts so much!"
I was crouched on the ground when all five of them gave me a weird look. What?
"She's been with humans way too long," mumbled Nora.
Derek ran over to me in a heartbeat and picked me up again. To be honest, I was beginning to enjoy how he easily scooped me up in his arms and flew me around. Way better than how Shia used to grab me by the hand, making me hang in mid-air. At least I don't have to worry about toppling down 60 feet.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, staring at his face. Goodness, up close, he was more gorgeous than the hottest Armani model. Heck, he could be the new "Most Handsome Man on Earth" unopposed.
He had his eyes narrowed as he stared at my new friends, or so I think, while I was busy admiring his face when he suddenly turned, my eyes catching his.
A blush creeped up to my face and I immediately looked away.
"Let's just go back. I'll deal with these pixies later," he grumbled, taking off with me still in his arms.
I smiled reassuringly at the group as we passed them. I was okay and it wasn't even their fault that I fell. I'd convince Derek to let them off.
Derek dropped me off at the palace before leaving for a very important meeting. I had to make an effort to stop myself from rolling my eyes. He had to go to very, very important meetings at least 4 times a day. I mean, come on! It's not like much was going on on Pixie Island anyway. All they needed to do was wave their hands and woosh! All problems solved.
Heize flew in and I smiled. "Hello baby!"
I tickled her and she laughed before moving away. She cleared her throat. "I am not a baby pixie, miss. I am at least 400 years old."
I gaped at her before breaking into another smile. "You look like a cute, little baby!"
She blushed. "I shall take my leave. I am in a hurry."
"Wait! Where are you going? Take me with you! I'm so bored!" I whined.
She hesitated for a minute, adjusting the glass on her tiny, cute face. "I uh- I don't think that's a good idea."
"Please? Derek says I can do whatever I want," I puckered out my lower lip.
"Derek?"
"Oh I mean uh- the King," I chuckled nervously. I had better address him with a little more respect in front of these people. He's more than a hundered years older than me anywat.
Even then though, he looked like he'd be in his late twenties if he was on Earth. You know, minus those weird a*s ears and eyebrows. And nose.
"Oh alright. But do not cause trouble young miss. The keeper of the magic scroll is a sour lady. She won't like it if you talk too much," she squeaked, flying off.
"I'll keep my lips zipped," I giggled excitedly as I follow her.
We went through doors and doors. I wondered why I didn't have to fly on my wings though. Heize then told me that Derek had instructed everything to be grounded so I didn't have to fly my way around and keep falling.
My heart fluttered at the news.
Stop it, you stupid heart!
But it wouldn't listen to me. He was just super, super sweet and that fact alone was making me feel things.
Things that were too risky for me to feel.
Snap out of it Narissa! Focus on surviving. You can't waver. Besides, you have no idea what he'll do to you once he finds out you're actually a human.
I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I hadn't noticed that we had walked through an archway and a into a large, exquisite library. A golden bookcase twisted itself to give us way and I followed Heize as she fluttered in tiny through the space.
She's so cute!
This place was eerily lighted, as in, it was considerably dark with many tables placed around. And the room wasn't square, it was actually round. There were paintings on the walls and also so many flowers and vines. My heart clenched as I realized that this probably was a very important room.
A beautiful girl sat on a pedestal like fancy chair which was floating. She had long, golden locks and she wore a long, green coloured dress. A beautiful necklace hung around her neck, made of blue diamonds. Her eyes were quiet slender and her nose was perfect.
I might develop a major inferiority complex before I leave this place.
Heize cleared her throat. "May I have the Scroll of Derham?"
Her voice was like a cool summer as she replied, "Of course. But you must prove yourself a loyal servant first."
I couldn't stop myself from staring at the face of the being. She didn't look like a pixie because she didn't have the ears or nose. Her face was exactly like that of a human's.
Heize flew forward and to my horror, the beautiful lady began to change into something more horrific. Her eyes turned from glassy, oceanic blue to all black and her hair turned orange.
My mouth dropped open.
I watched as the thing wrapped her flowing hair around Heize's body and pulled her close. She was taking something in from Heize's face.
Heize struggled only a bit and it didn't look like she was trying to free herself from this creature's grasp. She kept grunting and groaning in pain. I couldn't bear to hear her tiny pained voice.
"Let her go already!" I screamed.
The creature stopped what she was doing and turned her attention to me.
"Who might this be?" She growled, her voice thick and malicious, in complete contrast to the angelic one I had heard come out of her mouth the first time.
My breathing was uneven as I stared at her. Heize's groaning was so painful to listen to, like somebody was hitting me in the chest over and over again.
"Let her go! How can you do this to someone!" I yelled.
She raised her eyebrows, untangling her ugly orange hair from around Heize and taking new interest in me. I stared at her with utmost anger and contempt.
"No! Stop, please miss!" Heize's tiny voice squeaked as she flew down to me.
I looked at her and saw a tiny scar under her eye, which made me angrier than before. I turned to the woman again.
"Apologize. Apologize to her for this!" I screamed.
She seemed like she was enjoying all this commotion. Her eyes twinkled in delight. "A feisty one, I must say. What's your name, girl?"
My face was already red but to prove that I wasn't even the least bit afraid of her, I answered her. "Narissa."
She got off her hight pedestal-like chair and floated down, coming face-to-face with me. I felt a shiver run down my spine.
Her eyes.
They were so cold. Completely lifeless and absolutely merciless.
My hands shook but I didn't back down. How could someone be so, inhumane? Just because she wasn't human didn't give her the right to t*****e Heize just to prove her loyalty.
She reached up a hand and her icy cold fingers grazed the side of my face. The skin she touched felt like patches of dead grass on my face.
"You have a strong heart, my dear," she whispered, her mouth stretching into the ugliest smile. "So much ambition, so much passion, so much happiness. I love this."
I suddenly felt as if I was lost. Her eyes. Those dark holes. They were luring me in. Asking me to come in and give up everything I had. All of my happiness, all of my love. I saw the hint of a pair of dark eyes.
My mother's.
"Get away from her!" Heize's voice snapped back to my senses. I quickly looked away and the lady floated back to her chair, a disappointed look on her face. "Here are the king's orders! Give me the scrolls and let me go."
"Fine," she grumbled, now bored. She snapped her fingers and a couple of rolled up papers flew in. Heize grabbed them and quickly began to usher me out of the room.
As I was leaving, I saw the woman look at me with a look of excitement as she ran her fingers over her lips. Creeped out, I quickly ran out with Heize in tow.
"How could you do that?!" The tiny pixie exploded once we were outside. "I told you not to say a word! Oh dear, the King will be so angry. This should not have happened."
"What? Who even was that?" I asked. My arms still had goosebumps over them and I rubbed the skin, in attempt to soothe it.
"The lady, the keeper of the scrolls, is an Abere!" Heize exclaimed as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"An Abere? What's that?" I shivered. My chest still felt cold.
I had no idea just how many of these "creatures" existed. It was a shock enough for me to know that pixies not only exist but they have an entire realm to themselves. And now, I was beginning to discover that more of these things actually do exist.
"Well I don't really know much about them," Heize confessed. "But I know they're very cunning. They like to feed on humans and happiness. Very wicked indeed. Young miss must stay away from them."
I sighed. "How did you get the scrolls though?"
"I had to teleport to the King in an emergency. He was furious when he found out she was targeting you. But you have nothing to worry about. Abere's only eat humans. They just want a pixie's happiness," Heize explained.
I gulped. Oh I have something to worry about Heize.
I am most definitely a human. And that Abere now knows I live in the castle. Funny, though, she didn't speak up if she had realized who I really am, though.
Was she duped, just like the rest of the pixies?
At night, Derek came back. As soon as he was in the palace, he rushed to see me.
"Are you alright?" He asked urgently, grabbing me by the shoulders. His silver eyes wandered all over my face and body, making me feel queasy.
I nodded. "I'm okay."
"I heard what happened. Why would you go near the Abere?" He asked, speaking the word as if it was trash. Guess he really didn't like her.
But right now, his closeness was doing things to my heart which I didn't like so I took a step back. He pulled his arms back.
"I didn't know. Sorry," I mumbled.
He shook his head. "Just be careful of her, okay? She's very dangerous."
I looked at his outfit and pouted jn frustration. I wanted to see what he would look like in human appearance, with normal ears, nose and possibly, jeans and blazers.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"You're clothes. Do you usually wear this?" I asked.
He looked confused, like a cute little child. "I do. We haven't really had a fashion pixie for years now.." he drawled.
I clapped my hands together. "Fantastic! I'll do the job. I learned quiet a few tricks in the human world."
He scowled. "I hate humans."
My face fell. Somehow, his words had crushed something inside me.
Why do I even care? I'll leave as soon as my work's done here.
When he saw my shoulders slump, he quickly said, "But I'll be okay with you. You can do whatever you want with me. It's not your fault."
I frowned. "You mean, how I got banished?"
He shook his head. "I mean, it's not your fault you're half-human."
My jaw fell open.
Shia is half-human?!
