I don't know why but nature always decides to mess with you at the wrong time. If I knew who wrote the rules to this world, I'd go and have a serious talk.
Standing at about a foot's distance from me was my old frenemy, Marinna. And she had this fake yet sinister smile on her face as she stood with her perfectly manicured hand hanging mid-air infront of her.
She was being a b***h without even opening her mouth!
I stretched the corners of my mouth forcefully.
"Marinna." I acknowledged. "Marinna's sidekicks." I nodded towards the makeup shops standing right beside her.
It was either they didn't understand that I just took a dig at them or they were just plain stupid because they smiled and nodded their heads vigorously.
I turned my attention back to the their leader. "Moved out of town 2 years ago. Just moved back this week."
Marinna smirked, "I know. When was it, exactly?"
"Oh come on Mar. Don't pretend like you weren't dying to grab my place as the queen bee in school," I replied dryly.
Her sidekicks snickered while she threw an annoyed glare in their direction. She turned her attention back towards me.
"You know, I never got an invite to your dad's wedding. Is he even planning on holding one?" She sneered.
She knew what riled me up the most and that was exactly what she was using against me. Keeping my composure, I smiled brightly in her direction.
"Oh I don't know. Maybe he wants to enjoy the beauties of this world and maybe sleep with the entire town like your mom," I replied sweetly.
She narrowed her eyes but the bell rang, effectively cutting her off and giving me a chance to slip away.
"See you around Mar and barbies," I moved around her and quickly put as much distance between us as possible.
I walked into my first class of God-knows-what and immediately initiated whispers among the students.
'What is she doing here?'
'In the middle of term? Did her father bribe the principal again?'
'She's changed so much.'
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. I mean, was it really necessary for the entire student brigade to look like I had walked in after growing another head?
I spotted an empty desk beside a girl whom I don't recall seeing when I was here. Seeing every other place full I dropped down on the chair, startling her. She raised her head and looked at me.
She was a new face. Of course, I wouldn't say I knew everybody here but she had such a gentle yet mysterious looking face that I couldn't help but wonder why hadn't I seen her before.
We had an unpleasent sort of exchange before class began during which I kept my 'I'm not talking to anyone' demeanour quiet high as usual.
I was out as soon as the last bell rang. Trudging forward and ignoring the stares that were being thrown my way and made my way to the Principal's office. Of course, he wanted a short conversion on how and when I'm going to fit back in and blab blah blah.
I walked up to his door, all mentally prepared to hear his 'welcome back to the school' speech. It was specifically just for me because my Dad is a very important member on the board of directors of this place. So the teachers and the Principal find it necessary to kiss up to me all the time. The students do that too but they backbite me so that sort of makes up for it.
I placed my knuckles on the door but before I could knock, I heard a very deep masculine voice coming loudly from inside.
A very sexy deep voice.
Who might that be?
Curious to know, I leaned my ear against the door listening intently.
"Thankyou principal sir, for accepting me this time around. I promise you that whatever you were waiting for, shall get to you." Sexy-voice guy spoke.
"The pleasure is all mine, Cameron. We are very excited to have you on board with us." The principal's voice followed next.
After that, I heard his phone ring.
Shit! I can't hear anyth-
My thoughts were interrupted because the door swung open and slammed right into the side of my head.
I briefly heard myself shriek before I tumbled to the ground, landing on the side of my butt and my right shoulder.
Groaning, I rubbed my head and looked up to see a very hot guy staring at me through his thick rimmed glasses.
I expected him to say he's sorry or something like that but all he did was look at me with a heavily bored face before muttering 'watch your way' and walking away.
Unapologetic jerk!
Groaning and rubbing my shoulder I got back on my feet and straightened out my clothes.
I wore a cute outfit today! And now it's all dirty because of that unapologetic jerk.
The door swung open again and Principal Maxwell stepped out hastily fixing his tie.
He looked at me and threw on an apologetic smile, "Ah, Narissa dear you're here. I'm so sorry but the deans called for an emergency meeting. Meet me after school tomorrow okay?"
And with that he was gone.
I tried not to be loud when I kicked a locker on my way out. Of course, I kicked it carefully so as to not ruin my pretty boots.
With nothing else to do while sticking around, I walked out to my car in the parking lot. The white Mercedes EQC SUV looked radiant as the afternoon sun shined over it's metallic body.
But before I could even fish for the car controller in my bag, I was interrupted by none other than the school bad b***h, Marinna.
She grabbed my shoulder as I approached my baby, my car.
Agitated, I turned to face her.
The plastic smile was still plastered to her face as she raked her eyes over my entire body.
She always had this glint in her eyes back when I used to be friends with her. It was there all the time. When we had sleepovers or when we would go shopping. Or when I'd talk about my then boyfriend, the school's most famous boy and the football team quarterback, Will. Except that whenever Will was mentioned, she'd have this heavily jealous look in her eyes which she thought I was too dum to notice.
Stretching my face into a fake smile that mirrored hers, I spoke, "Yes, Marinna?"
"You're still the same," she mused.
"And you're not. I see you got sluttier," I eased back.
That didn't wipe the smile off her face. If anything, I saw it turn into a sneer which reminded me of the shrunken head of R.L Stine's book 'How I Got My Shrunken Head'.
"Why are you back? All of a sudden?" She finally cut through the niceties and whatever she was pretending to be.
"I don't think it was any of your business yesterday," I put a finger on my face as if trying to remember. "And I don't think it is today either."
"Seriously. This place isn't for you anymore Narissa. No one likes you anymore. Just go back," she said, eyeing my car behind me. "You won't get back the position you lost."
She was referring to my previous position as the Sun Cliff High's queen bee and bad b***h.
My eyes narrowed, a mocking smirk over taking my face, "You're intimidated by return because I still have good money, aren't you?"
I was trying to hide the humor in my voice.
She looked taken aback my comment and it looked like she was struggling for a comeback. She did open her mouth to reply but I cut her off.
"Listen. I'm done talking to you. I don't give a damn about this school, town or you. So please, stay clear of me. And I've stopped being all fake-y and being a show of power. The money you and everybody else at this stupid school see," I jabbed my finger in the direction of my car, "is my dad's. So if you want to talk, go talk to him. I'm hoping I won't be seeing you around."
Not waiting for her to reply and stretching this unwanted conversation for long, I spun around and quickly walked to my car.
***
I stretched my arms over my head and plopped down on my bed. I'd come home right after that unwanted and meaningless confrontation with Marinna and slammed myself shut in my room. Jane came a few times, asking if I was okay and stuff like that but I just brushed her off everytime.
Right now, I was just staring at the ceiling of my room, wondering why life was doing me dirty like this.
Couldn't everything go back to the way it used to be?
My mom would be back. We would go shopping to the mall again. Have ice cream again. She'd take me to her communtiy parties and we'd have fun together there, just the two of us together.
Couldn't all that happen again?
Couldn't we take trips with dad again? Couldn't dad and I read or talk about books again? Couldn't we just... be the way we used to be?
I rubbed my eyes and walked near to my room's window. It overlooked the empty roadways of Sun Cliff and the forest behind them. I dipped my head back and observed the moon.
The moonlight scattered across the otherwise dark and empty roadway near my house. I wouldn't lie if I said that my house was a little away from civilization. In a slightly secluded area.
Of course this was because it was so big it couldn't fit with the other cosy neighbourhoods.
And my dad has always loved luxury. He'd want anything that was precious or worth the money. Not that he was an arrogant person or something.
He had money, he simply bought what he wanted and could.
Staring at the forest illuminated by the mesmerising moonlight, I wondered how many secrets it actually held. What creatures lived in the deepest part of it, how they all lived and loved.
Did they even exist?
My thoughts were interrupted by a strange noise that came from somewhere outside my room. Confused, I turned around to look at my door.
What was that? Was it Jane again?
When the door didn't swing open I walked over and yanked it open, peering out in the hallway.
It was eerily dark and empty.
Drawing my eyebrows together in confusion I stepped out.
"Jane? Is that you?" I called out.
No one answered. Thinking of it as my imagination I turned back but I heard it again.
The sound of someone landing on the ground.
I slowly walked back into the hall taking every step carefully because I really did not want to trip and sprain my ankle or something.
I reached the end of the huge hallway but still I couldn't see or hear anything. That's weird because I swear I heard something a while ago.
Suddenly, a flash of grey caught my eye. I saw it dash downstairs.
Determined to find out what it was I dashed after it. Clambering downstairs, I landed in the dimly lit hall downstairs. Walking hastily forward I threw quick glances everywhere but I couldn't see anyone.
My back collided with someone and I yelped.
"It's me, young miss," came the feeble voice of our new maid, Jia.
I turned to look at her and there she stood, her small face looking concerned.
Her age was around 25 years but she had such a tiny body frame anyone could easily mistake her for a freshman in school. She was one of the first people Dad had hired when we got back here.
Pinching my nose in slight frustration that I mistook her movement for something weird, I spoke, "Why is the house so dark Jia? Turn on some lights please."
She nodded, looking intimidated.
"You didn't see something weird around here, did you?" I asked her just to make sure.
She shook her head, her red ponytail swinging side to side, "No miss. There is no one here."
