Chapter 12: The Distance Between Fates

1032 Words
(Third-Person POV) A full month passed since Clarice Silver crossed into the human world. To anyone watching from the outside, her life looked simple now classes, new friends, quiet routines, and the gentle security of a home that didn’t know her past. But beneath that peaceful surface lay the truth: She was hiding. Her aunt was protecting her. And Dimitri was searching. Three separate paths, all slowly, inevitably moving toward collision. --- Clarice had settled into her new identity better than she expected. Not completely her wolf still stirred, restless and uncomfortable in crowded places but well enough to pass as an ordinary human girl. Her aunt, a woman with a deceptively gentle smile and the instincts of someone who had hidden from supernatural politics before, made certain Clarice blended in perfectly. The enchanted concealer a delicate charm disguised under Clarice’s hair suppressed her wolf aura so effectively that even experienced werewolves wouldn’t sense her unless they physically touched her. Her aunt had warned her: “Humans are easier to fool than wolves. But wolves won’t find you as long as you keep this charm on.” Clarice had kept it on every single day. Her aunt also insisted they move houses just two weeks after Clarice arrived. “Just a precaution,” she said with a reassuring pat on Clarice’s shoulder. Clarice didn’t question it. Her aunt always hid truths behind soft smiles. So they left the first address the one Clarice stole from her father’s study and moved across the city to a much quieter neighborhood. It was inconvenient. But safe. And safety mattered more than convenience. --- During these weeks, Clarice started attending her classes regularly and slowly built a small circle of friends. The most surprising addition was Adrian Valerius. He was polite, composed, and strangely calm for someone humans seemed obsessed with. Their friendship wasn’t deep yet at least not from Clarice’s perspective but it was steady. In two weeks, Adrian had become: Someone she could sit with during breaks, Someone she could talk to about books, Someone who didn’t judge or pry. He was simply… present. And she appreciated that more than she realized. Adrian himself didn’t push for anything. He maintained an unspoken distance while still being attentive, as though he understood Clarice was the type of person who needed time before letting people get close. They studied together sometimes. He helped her with difficult assignments. She showed him a few human cafés he’d never tried. Only small things. But small things mattered. Meanwhile, Far from the human world, Dimitri stood on the edge of another forest, cold wind cutting at his skin as he stared at yet another dead end. Rylan stood beside him, panting slightly. His usual humor was gone now, replaced by frustration. Lucien’s voice came faintly through the communicator. “Another move, Alpha. The neighbors confirmed the aunt left the previous house two weeks ago.” Dimitri clenched his jaw. That made three relocations in one month. Her aunt was good. Too good. The first address the one Clarice had taken from her father’s study turned out to be only the place her aunt had lived before, not her permanent residence. By the time Dimitri arrived, the house was empty. Cold. And filled with the faintest lingering scent of Clarice, already weeks old. His wolf tore inside him, restless and furious. “She’s slipping away again,” Rylan muttered. “No,” Dimitri said quietly. “She isn’t slipping away. She’s being hidden.” The enchanted charm Clarice wore made things worse. Normally, he could find his mate by instinct alone the bond pulling at him, whispering directions like a quiet lit flame in the dark. But now? Her presence was muffled, reduced to faint echoes barely detectable even at close distances. It infuriated him. It terrified him. But he didn’t stop. Every morning, Dimitri woke with a renewed purpose. Every night, he searched until exhaustion turned the world into a blur. He slept little. Ate little. Thought of nothing except the girl who ran from him. Not because she rejected him… …but because she was afraid. And that truth stabbed deeper than anything else. --- Clarice sat in the campus courtyard, sunlight warm against her face as she read through her notes. Around her, students chatted loudly, some talking about assignments, some about weekend parties. Adrian approached her, carrying two iced drinks. “You looked like you needed something cold,” he said, placing one beside her. She blinked. “Oh thank you. You didn’t have to.” “I know,” Adrian replied calmly. “But I wanted to.” Clarice smiled softly, holding the cup between her palms. Moments like this made her feel normal. Safe. Human. And she clung to those feelings because they grounded her — even though the world she left behind was still searching. Her aunt often reminded her: “Live. Don’t look back. The past will find you only if you invite it.” Clarice believed her. But she didn’t know that fate didn’t wait for an invitation. It simply followed its path. --- That evening, Dimitri stood at the edge of a busy human city, staring at the vast skyline. Rylan came to stand beside him. he has also been feeling restless lately and hopes there find her soon, because he didn't know how to deal with Dimitri's mood swings. "Ahhhh...if I had known I would have begged Lucien to come instead". he said in his mind. “We’re close,” Rylan said carefully. Dimitri didn’t answer, but his jaw tightened. Somewhere out there, in the maze of buildings and streets… Clarice Silver was living a new life. A life without him. A life she thought could hide her forever. But the bond didn’t fade. His determination didn’t weaken. And the world was shrinking between them. Slowly. Inevitably. Soon… the distance between fate and reality would close. and when something just crossed his mind, something that's what border him, he just hope no one tries to steal his mate, just the thought alone made him get even angrier, Rylan also felt it and swallowed hard wishing there would just find her immediately.
