Chapter Two

1429 Words
Adrian’s POV: I can’t stop thinking about her. Evelyn. It’s been a few days since we met, and yet, she lingers in my mind like a melody I can’t shake. Her voice, soft and hesitant, as if she's afraid of what might happen if she lets herself feel too much. The way she looked at me, as if she was seeing me for the first time. It was more than just curiosity—it was an invitation. I don’t know why I can’t stop thinking about her. Maybe it’s the way her grey eyes seem to carry an ocean of unspoken pain, or how her smile, though strained, reaches her eyes in a way that says she’s been starved for affection. There’s a sadness there, a quiet ache that matches my own. But that’s not all. She’s beautiful—striking, even. And I can tell she’s not fully aware of how captivating she is. The way her brown hair frames her face, the way she walks, like she’s always carrying a weight on her shoulders, but still manages to stand tall. She’s not just a woman caught in the turbulence of a loveless marriage. No, she’s a person in her own right. And I can see that she’s more than capable of standing up for herself if only she believes it. She’s not mine, and I’m not sure I can claim her. Not in the way I want to, at least. But I’ll be here. I’ll be her friend, her confidant if she’ll let me. And if she ever decides she’s ready to break free, I’ll be waiting. --- Evelyn’s POV: The more I see Adrian, the more I can’t ignore the tension between us. It’s subtle, quiet, but it’s there. When I’m with him, I feel something stir within me—a spark I haven’t felt in years. Today, when I ran into him at the local café, I didn’t expect the rush of warmth that filled me when our eyes met. It was like time slowed for just a second. His blue eyes—intense and full of mystery—locked onto mine, and for a fleeting moment, I forgot everything else. The chaos of my marriage, the quiet desperation I’ve been feeling—it all faded away. “I’m glad you could make it,” he said, his voice low and inviting, as though he was genuinely happy to see me. I nod, but there’s this knot in my stomach. He makes me want things I haven’t allowed myself to want in so long. Connection. Affection. Love. “You’ve been in town for a while now,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. “You must have made some friends by now.” He chuckles, and I can’t help but notice the way it lights up his face, the way his smile reaches his eyes. It’s disarming. “I suppose you could say that,” he replies. “I’ve met a few people, but I tend to keep my circle small. It’s easier that way.” I sense there’s more to it—something unspoken. But I don’t push. Not yet. As we talk, I catch glimpses of his life outside the quiet walls of my own existence. He’s charming, intelligent, and effortlessly magnetic. People gravitate toward him. I can see it now—the subtle way he holds the attention of everyone around him. It’s not just his looks, though he’s undeniably handsome in a rugged, untamed way. It’s his presence. People don’t just like him; they respect him. The conversation drifts to casual things—books, music, hobbies—but I can’t shake the feeling that Adrian is holding something back. It’s not just his guarded nature; it’s more than that. I feel like there’s a piece of him he’s not ready to share, and for some reason, that makes me want to know him more. --- Adrian’s POV: Later that night, as I sit in my living room, the flickering of the TV does nothing to distract me. I’m lost in thought, my mind replaying the way Evelyn looked at me today, the way she responded when I asked if she was happy. I can’t help but think of her in a way I shouldn’t. But it’s hard to deny the pull. The attraction. I’ve been around enough people to know when someone is hiding their true self. Evelyn is no exception. The walls she’s built are high and thick, but I can see through them. I know there’s more to her than the quiet, submissive wife she presents herself as. She doesn’t deserve this. She doesn’t deserve to be treated as a possession. I can’t keep my thoughts from drifting to her, and that’s dangerous. I know that. But what if she could be something more to me? What if I could show her a world beyond the one she’s trapped in? I run a hand through my hair, frustrated with myself. I need to focus. But just as I’m about to grab my jacket and go for a run to clear my head, there’s a knock on the door. I open it to find one of my friends, Callum, standing there with a grin plastered on his face. “You busy?” Callum asks, his voice always full of energy. “No,” I reply, stepping aside. “What’s up?” “Good,” he says, stepping in. “We’re throwing a little party tonight. Thought you might want to join. You’ve been cooped up in here too long. It’s time you met some real people around here.” I raise an eyebrow. “Real people?” He chuckles. “The kind who don’t spend their days brooding over nothing.” I smile, but my mind lingers on Evelyn. Her image flashes in my thoughts, and I can’t ignore it. But I push it down for now. Tonight, I need to step outside this bubble I’ve created for myself. --- Evelyn’s POV: The next evening, I’m alone in the house again. James is gone, probably off with one of his countless lovers, and I find myself standing by the window, watching the cars pass by. My thoughts keep returning to Adrian. He’s so different from James. So... free. The way he moves through life without needing approval, without bending to anyone’s will. I envy that. I envy him. But the deeper I get into these thoughts, the more I realize how dangerous they are. I’m not the kind of woman who should entertain the idea of someone like Adrian. I’m married. I have obligations. And yet, I can’t stop wondering what it would be like to be wanted for who I am. To be seen as more than just James’s wife. --- Adrian’s POV: The party is a blur of people, noise, and laughter. I’m surrounded by faces I’ve seen before, some I recognize from work, others from my old life. But there’s a part of me that keeps looking for something—someone—someone who’s not like the rest. When I spot her, standing in the doorway, looking uncertain yet curious, I feel a strange pull. Evelyn. She’s here. I never expected her to show up, but I can see she’s here, and she’s alone. My heart skips a beat. “Adrian,” Callum calls out, snapping me back to reality. “Stop staring, man. Go talk to her.” I shake my head, a wry smile pulling at my lips. “You’re insufferable.” “Go on,” he insists. I hesitate, but only for a moment. I push through the crowd, my gaze locked on her. When our eyes meet, there’s a flicker of recognition in her expression. She looks out of her element, like she doesn't want to be here I reach her side, my voice low and inviting. “You made it.” Her smile is small but genuine. “I wasn’t sure if I should come. I’m... not used to these things.” “You don’t have to be,” I reply. “Just relax. It’s just a party.” She nods, but I can see the hesitation in her eyes. I want to pull her away from this. But for now, I’ll let her stay in this world, if only for a little while. I’m not sure where this will go, but I know one thing for sure—I won’t let her slip away. Not when I know what she’s capable of, not when I see the strength beneath the surface.
