Lyra The road stretched out before me in a blur, but I barely noticed. My fingers gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles ached, but I couldn't bring myself to loosen my hold. Liam's hatred for my father, his constant belittling of me, and the way he defended Evelyn—all of it flashed through my mind. Tears streamed down my cheeks, and my stomach twisted in painful spasms. Even though I hadn't eaten, this pain went far beyond the usual ache. I barely made it to the hospital's parking lot before I passed out. When I opened my eyes, I found myself staring at an unfamiliar white ceiling, in a dim room, lying on a hospital bed, hooked up to several of those machines I could hear and now see.
