Just walked over and handed me an envelope, like we were in the middle of some old spy movie. “This is a one-time thing, Lyra,” he said, voice flat but eyes narrowing on me. “When I said I’d do anything for you, I didn’t mean digging into people’s backgrounds was part of the deal… but you just had to call me, didn’t you?” I took the envelope from him, lips twitching into a faint smirk. “Thank you very much, Jonathan.” He let out a sharp breath through his nose. “Yeah, don’t thank me.
