Lyra When I got back to the office, I couldn’t believe my eyes. For a second, I thought I was dreaming. My desk wasn’t just covered, it was buried. Completely swallowed in a sea of paperwork. Files were stacked so high, it looked like someone had built a fortress on top of my table. I blinked twice, hoping I was imagining it. But no, the pile was very real. And worse, it wasn’t stopping. Another load was being dumped onto my desk by an assistant. She balanced a heavy box against her hip and dropped it with a thud so loud I was sure the entire floor heard it. Papers scattered, some sliding off and spilling onto the ground. “What is this?” The woman gave me a smile—the kind you throw when you don’t really want to explain yourself. I could’ve sworn she rolled her eyes before answering.
