When the fire burned low, he added more logs. Then he prowled through her closets, and discovered an inflatable air mattress and extra sheets. Both were brand-new. Since he didn’t look forward to spending another night on the couch, comfortable though it was, he pushed it out of the way, unfolded the air mattress, rummaged in her kitchen drawers until he found batteries for the pump, and inflated it on the floor in front of the fireplace. Destiny stayed hidden in her room. He climbed the stairs a few times and listened at her door. The first time, he heard her still crying. The next two times, her room was silent. He figured she’d worn herself out with that emotional outburst, and she was probably sleeping. Or maybe she was sulking. Either way, he wasn’t going to disturb her any more than
