The Envelope

560 Words
Elena’s fingers were shaking. The red ink on the envelope said just one word. Elena. How did he know her name? She never told anyone here. She used a different name on her ID. The stranger was standing by the door, watching the street. Rain was sliding down the glass. "You have 10 minutes," he said again. "After that, I leave. And you’re on your own." Elena sat down at the table. Her heart was so loud she thought he could hear it. She slid her finger under the seal. Inside were 3 things. First, a photo. A black and white picture of her. But not from now. It was from 2 years ago. She was standing outside her old apartment. The one she left after... after that night. No one was supposed to have this. Second, a newspaper cutting. The headline made her freeze. "Local businesswoman missing. Police suspect foul play." The date was from last month. The woman in the photo looked exactly like her. Same eyes, same mole on the cheek. Third, a key. Small. Silver. With a number tag. 214. Elena looked up. "What is this?" The stranger finally turned to face her. He pulled his hoodie down a little. His face was sharp, tired. And that scar on his hand was more visible now. "My name is Aryan," he said. "I used to work for them." "Who are them?" Elena whispered. "The people who are looking for you. The people who think you’re dead." Elena felt the blood drain from her face. "I am dead. To them. That’s the whole point." Aryan shook his head. "Not anymore. They found you. That’s why I’m here." He pointed at the photo. "This was taken 3 days ago. Outside your apartment. Someone’s been watching you, Elena." Elena stood up fast. The chair made a noise. "You’re lying. I changed everything. My name, my job, my city." "They have resources," Aryan said. "Money, people, time. And they want what you took from them." "I didn’t take anything!" Elena’s voice broke. Aryan looked at her for a long time. Then he sighed. "Maybe not. But they think you did. And key number 214 is the proof." Elena picked up the key. It was cold. "Proof of what?" "Of a locker. In the central train station. Locker 214." Aryan took a step closer. "Inside that locker is the only thing that can keep you alive. Or get you killed." The lights in the shop flickered. Outside, a car slowed down in front of "Midnight Brew". Headlights cut through the window and then moved on. Aryan cursed under his breath. "We don’t have time. You need to decide right now. Come with me to the station, or stay here and wait for them to come." Elena looked at the photo again. At the newspaper cutting. At the key in her hand. Her old life was supposed to be buried. But it just knocked on her door. She took a deep breath. "Fine. We go to the station. But if you’re lying to me..." "I’m not," Aryan said. He was already walking to the door. "And Elena? Don’t look back." Elena followed him out into the rain. She didn’t lock the shop. She didn’t take her bag. Behind them, the bell rang one last time. Ting. And across the street, someone was watching.
