CHAPTER THIRTEEN: THE ESCAPE

1260 Words
POV: Arabela The bunker has multiple levels. Vittorio leads me past servers that hum with information. Past filing systems containing names, photographs, evidence. Past surveillance feeds showing a world that's burning above us. "How deep does this go?" I ask. "To a tunnel system built during the Cold War," he replies. "The mansion was built on property that once housed federal infrastructure. When I purchased the land, I purchased the access points." We descend through metal corridors. The air gets colder. Staler. "Where are we going?" I ask. "A private airstrip. Forty kilometers northeast. A plane that's already fueled and waiting." He checks his watch. "We have ninety minutes before federal air traffic control initiates a lockdown of the region." "You'll never make it." "We'll make it because I've been planning this exit for seven years," he says. "Every contingency prepared. Every route mapped. Every document transferred to accounts they can't freeze." We reach a heavy door. Vittorio enters a code. It slides open, revealing a tunnel that descends at a steep angle. Lights embedded in the walls activate automatically. "This was a missile storage facility," Vittorio continues as we walk. "Sixty feet below ground level. The federal government doesn't even remember it exists." My phone buzzes. A call. Ricco's name on the screen. I answer without asking permission. "Arabela," Ricco's voice is urgent. "Listen to me. He's taking you across state lines. Once he does, federal jurisdiction becomes complicated. You need to—" Vittorio reaches over and ends the call. "Your brother is trying to play hero," he says. "From inside a federal building. How touching." He takes the phone and destroys it. Smashes it against the tunnel wall until it's plastic fragments. "You don't get to stay connected to them," he says. "From this moment forward, your only connection is to me." POV: Ricco The call was traced. Thomas and the prosecution team are moving immediately, but Ricco knows it won't be fast enough. Vittorio's head start in those tunnels is forty minutes minimum. "We can alert air traffic control," Thomas says, moving faster than Ricco has ever seen him move. "Ground all private flights in the region." "He won't be using commercial airspace," Ricco says. "He'll fly low. Under radar. He has pilots trained for exactly this." "Then we lose them." "No," Ricco says quietly. "We lose her. We lose Arabela." Thomas's jaw clenches. "I'm going after him," Ricco says. "You're a witness in federal protection. You don't—" "I'm done hiding," Ricco interrupts. "My father is gone, and he's taking my sister with him. I know his secondary locations. I know his contingencies. I know exactly where he'll go once he leaves the country." "That's suicide," Thomas says. "Probably," Ricco agrees. "But it's better than sitting here pretending federal authority actually means something when Vittorio can just walk through it like it doesn't exist." POV: Alessio The detention cell is small. Alessio sits on a bench and thinks about escape routes. Thinks about the fact that he still has the tracking device Vittorio placed in him eight years ago. Thinks about the fact that Vittorio doesn't detain people unless he plans to use them for something. A guard opens the door. "Your father wants to see you," the guard says. Alessio stands. Follows the guard through corridors that don't make sense. They're not in the federal building. They're in a different location entirely—somewhere private, somewhere contained. When the door opens, Vittorio is waiting. "Hello, Alessio," he says. "Where am I?" Alessio asks. "Where you were always going to end up," Vittorio replies. "In a facility designed specifically for managing difficult assets." "Sophia—" "Is being medicated," Vittorio says. "She'll remain compliant. She'll remain safe. As will you, if you cooperate." "I destroyed your mansion." "You burned a building," Vittorio corrects. "The empire is still intact. The financial systems still exist. The infrastructure is still operational. You accomplished nothing except proving how desperate you've become." POV: Sophia Sophia wakes in a medical facility. IVs in her arms. Monitors around her. The familiar hum of pharmaceutical infrastructure. A doctor approaches. "Your medication has been adjusted," the doctor says. "You're going to feel more stable. More present. That's the goal." "Where am I?" Sophia asks. "Somewhere safe," the doctor replies. "Somewhere where you can recover properly." But Sophia recognizes this facility. Has been here before. This is one of Vittorio's private clinics. One of the places he owns that don't officially exist. She's back. She's always been here. The escape was never real. Nothing was ever real. POV: Vittorio (Tunnel) They emerge from the tunnel forty-five minutes after entering it. The airstrip is exactly where Vittorio said it would be. A private runway. A jet waiting. A crew already running final checks. Arabela looks at the plane with something like resignation. "If you get on that plane," Vittorio says, "you never come back. There is no ransom, no negotiation, no point at which I release you. You understand that?" "Yes," she says. "And you're choosing to board anyway?" She looks at him. Really looks at him. Like she's seeing something she hasn't seen before. "I'm choosing to survive," she says. "Everything else is secondary." He nods. Almost approves. They board the plane. The cabin is luxury—leather seats, a full bar, secure communication systems. It's a flying palace designed for a man who's just lost his empire but is pretending he hasn't. "Once we're airborne," Vittorio says, "you're going to understand something. The federal government doesn't control power. Money controls power. And I have resources in seventeen countries that the federal government will never be able to touch." "And then what?" Arabela asks. "And then you help me rebuild," he says. "You become my chief asset. My daughter officially. My heir in reality." The engines start. The plane moves toward the runway. "Before we take off," Vittorio continues, "I need to show you something." He pulls up a video on his secure tablet. It's a recording. From the federal building. Ricco, standing in front of media, preparing to give testimony. "Your brother is about to tell everyone about me," Vittorio explains. "Is about to detail seventeen years of operations. Is about to dismantle everything I've built." "Then why aren't you concerned?" I ask. "Because concern is for people who operate within systems," Vittorio says. "And I stopped doing that the moment your brother chose testimony over you." He shows me another video. Alessio in a detention cell. Sophia in a medical facility. Both of them completely under Vittorio's control. "Your friends couldn't save themselves," Vittorio says. "Your brother chose justice over you. The federal government can't reach beyond its borders. Which means you're not being rescued. You're being abandoned." The plane takes off. The runway disappears beneath us. The United States becomes smaller. And I finally understand what Vittorio was preparing for the entire time. Not escape. Relocation. Not survival of the empire. Evolution of it. My phone—the one I somehow still have—buzzes with a notification. A news alert: Federal Prosecution Begins Against Vittorio Casarella. Witness Testimony Reveals Scope of Criminal Empire. Vittorio looks at the notification and smiles. "Let them prosecute an empty chair," he says. "The real empire is already gone. And it's taking you with it." The plane ascends. Crosses the border. Enters airspace that the federal government can no longer control. And somewhere behind us, Ricco is givin g testimony about a man who's already left the country. A man who's won by losing everything.
