Chapter 6: Nick of Time
So, I had to do the only thing I could. I put Cameron bridal-style in my arms and ducked in the small space behind his bed. Even though it was not particularly easy while battling tears and on the verge of dying, I tried to keep Cameron quiet while patting his small shoulder and hugging him tightly. He tried to ask me what was happening at first and wanted to wiggle out of my arms, but when he heard the footsteps, he quietened down.
After a few seconds, Cameron’s door was kicked open. I heard metal clicking against metal which I soon realized that it was the c*****g of a gun. Even though I had tried my hardest to keep him quiet, Cameron’s squeak was still audible. The damage was already done. This was the end. Hopefully not for Cameron. I ran a hand through his hair, silently saying goodbye.
Tears ran down his eyes as he finally understood the gravity of the situation, and he pressed myself to me, hiding himself in my torso. I wish I could make him disappear. And so, I did. I turned my body in such a way that Cameron’s small shaking 3’1 body was protected by mine.
I heard a guy, his boots clacking on the wooden floor, slowly approaching the bed. I gulped, my eyes closing, as I felt something cool press in the back of my head, making me shiver. I prayed to God one final time. God, thank you for everything. Even if this guy kills me, save Cameron. This little guy has nothing to do with this. Heck, even I don’t know what I have to do with it. My Parents…God please…Help me…
“Bye, bye Prince Jade!” the man chuckled, sounding older than me, but I couldn’t look at him because my back was facing him, protecting my brother.
Prince Jade?
I counted the seconds, every second alive just praying someone will save Cam, save me, or maybe this was just a horrible, horrible dream. Then like a firecracker going off, I heard the blast of a gun and my body jerked.
I was surely dead. I am not alive. I don’t know about Cameron, but I am not alive. I cannot be.
But…somehow, I am?
Everything seemed to slow down. Light, sound, everything. Almost as if in a trance, I heard a thud as a heavy body crashed first on the wall behind me and then on the floor. Something wet touched my socks and it was at that time I could open my eyes and see all this blood under me, soaking my pants from the knee down, coming from the man who was just shot. I gagged at the sight, keeping Cam behind me always.
What? How?
It was then I heard a voice. “You are just going to sit there and wait for them to kill you? Move!”
