Chapter 16: Backstory 2.0
I felt angry, and I could not contain it, so I stood up and began pacing. "My parents, my real parents are Karen and Sam. I don't even know in which hospital I was born; at what time I was born. Just because my birthdate matches some random document, does not mean..." I trailed off when I saw the next image which Victoria had gotten up from her seat and swiped at.
It was my birth certificate. It was the same hospital. It was the same time, as the previous certificate. "You were switched at the time of your birth with a still born, Jade. Your parents, Sam and Karen, had gotten a still born. And it was a girl."
It was like a twilight zone I had stepped into. I distinctly remember my father had said that they had decided to keep the gender of the baby to be a secret. And my father was stuck in traffic when I was born so he missed the entire event of my birth. My mother was dosed with heavy drugs as she had to go through a C-section. They had wheeled me in when my father had arrived, and my mother was awake.
"I don't believe you. A document, probably forged, will not make me believe you."
"Listen, you dumb i***t. I don't have anything to gain by telling you some story. you wanted to know the truth. I'm telling you the truth. It's your choice whether to believe me or not." She snapped. I kept shut after that.
"Do you want me to continue with your story or not?" She asked me. I just nodded, listening carefully. I was having problem believing her, but as she said, what did she have to gain by telling me all this.
"As I was saying you were switched at birth to keep you safe from RE-EDIT. King and Queen Jade had let you go. They kept out of your life to keep you safe. For your own protection, they didn't even try to find out to whom you went to. Only the doctor knew." She took a deep breath before continuing, breaking off her eye contact and pulling up her leg on the bed.
She pushed some cloth of her dress out of the way and tied her gun against a holster on her thigh. I gulped. That was both scary and hot. "However, recently, their informants had told them that there was an unusual activity going on in the RE-EDIT headquarters. Despite all the sacrifices your biological parents had made, to keep you away from those fools, somehow, they had found out that you were alive. I was sent here to bring you back to them."
A killer/smuggler...working for the royals? Something seemed fishy...Suddenly, her phone buzzed in my hand and a message popped up on the screen. Before I could do anything else, she grabbed the phone from my hand, and read the message.
"We need to go." She locked the phone and flipped one of her shoes. There, I saw was a separate place where small items could be stored. I raised my eyebrows. This idea was indigenous. Coming back on topic, I shook my head.
"I need to know more. You said RE-EDIT. I have heard the name. They are a group of people who do not think that there should be monarchy anymore." Victoria nodded. "Yes, they actually revolted against them because of some gun laws which were passed which didn't benefit them." She didn't elaborate more. It was silent for a while before I decided to speak up.
"So, what are you? A royal guard? Some security? CBI? CIA? FBI? Another three-letter word?" She took in her profile once more in the mirror and then turned to face me. She smirked, her red coloured lips striking against her skin tone.
"I am the mafia."
