Chapter 2: Finch is Murdered

1000 Words
Chapter 2: Finch is Murdered The ride today was so damn horrible, I thought as I made my way up to the steps of Welch-Morgan High School, shaking my hair off the raindrops. It had decided to pour down as soon as I exited my home and was going to the bus stop around the corner.  I waited just inside the school gates and watched as one of my closest friends, Melissa ran from the bus door to the stairs leading up to the gate, her blue bag clutched above her head to escape the rain. I looked appreciatively at her Star Wars T-shirt as I opened the glass door for her just as she reached the top step. She smiled at me and gave me a quick hug, before dragging me off to the West corridor where our lockers were. On the way, she stopped by Trent’s locker, gave a quick kiss to him and began dragging him to our lockers as well. Over her shoulder, Trent grinned at me and laughed at the state of my hair. “I was lucky enough to escape the downpour, man.”  We had reached mine and Melissa’s locker by now. Trent leaned on the other side of Melissa’s locker, giving his girlfriend a kiss on the cheek as she stuffed her wet bag in the metal box. “The climate here is so weird!” Melissa said, pouting, as she began to take her notebooks out for the first couple periods. I mocked Melissa with the same words in a high-pitched voice, making Trent laugh. I received a light slap on the shoulder by Melissa, but it was cool between us. Best friends do weird s**t like this. She put her black hair behind her ear and fixed her green glasses on top of her nose. Without them, she is one hundred percent blind. “You both saw or heard today’s news?” She asked us, closing her locker.  “Yeah, that of Aberdeen, right? It’s scary.” Trent shuddered, draping an arm on her shoulder, as we began walking together to class. Trent and I had Math; Melissa had Biology. “Wait, wait, catch me up. I didn’t hear anything of Aberdeen.” I requested. We passed a couple of people some of whom said hi to us. Trent was popular and I was popular through him. I was a nerd, but I wasn't unknown. “Sure! You know about Finch Aberdeen?” After I shook my head, I received a jab about how General Affairs is so important, from Melissa. In return I just ruffled her dirty blonde hair, making her angry enough to make her cheeks red. Trent laughed again, pinching her cheek before beginning. “Aberdeen Industries are one of the most successful industries in the production of weapons in Europe. Finch Aberdeen was the successor of the factory after his father died of poisoning a few years ago. There was always speculation and controversy that Finch himself had poisoned his father’s food to gain control of the company. There were multiple lawsuits by his own mother on Finch but always countersued for defamation. Finch died—um, was murdered, a few nights ago according to experts, but his body was found yesterday.” Trent began with a shudder. He hated violence of any kind.  “Yes! I overheard my mother telling my father that he was murdered brutally! You guys know she works as a Pathologist and helps in conducting autopsies, right? Well, I heard that she heard through the grapevine that he was tortured and then killed. When someone found him in front of his doorstep, he already had broken fingers and several near fatal wounds. But mom said that he still must not have died. He was also injected with a poison of some kind. He must have finally been killed with a bullet to the heart first then to the head.” Melissa chimed in. She loves violence. We were near our class but there were still a couple minutes left before it started, so we just huddled up like a group in the corner, shifting a bit sometimes to ensure we are not standing in someone's way. We are kind people like that. “These kinds of incidents make you realize that there are still psychopaths out there. It makes me terrified.” Trent shook once, violently. “Well,” Melissa speculated, “he was heading to his own death. There had been quite a few reports that he had been using old, dysfunctional pieces of guns into new ones. That is pretty much illegal. He was facing some pretty serious charges but there was no proof. It doesn’t surprise me that someone, who was incredibly impatient and not to mention-pissed as hell, decided to just end his life.” Trent nodded in agreement. I took a minute to let all that information soak in. “You guys are total know-it-alls. I wonder what an argument between you guys looks like.” I teased. Mel just stuck her tongue out at me, while Trent just shook his head. “Don’t ask, man. I will never forget September 6th, 4:26 pm.” He leaned on the wall. We both looked at him, wondering what he meant. “Our anniversary is February 2nd. What happened on September 6th?” “That is the time and date of the only time I won against you.” Trent hugged a violent Mel, which made me burst out laughing at their antics. The bell rang at that point and we said bye to Mel, making our way into the class. The seats were unassigned assigned and we took our seats at our normal desks, third from the front, towards the window. Before Mr. Delaney can come, I quickly pulled out mine and Trent’s worksheet and gave him his, while he gave me my Chemistry. Thanking each other for the work with a bro hand shake and making some jokes about Mr. Harris, our Chemistry professor, who looked like that guy Kevin, in The Office, I focused my attention at the door as Mr. Delaney entered. Let the day begin, I thought as I raised my hand to give my attendance when my name was called.
