[Pete's POV]
I can't lie. I felt like I meant nothing to Gold. She told me one minute she'd be available and the next, she did the complete opposite, she just left without seeing me first, or saying a proper goodbye. Could it be one of those things ladies do to test men, a little stunt.
I don't mind if that was the case. I thought to myself. Not to lie, sometimes I felt like I was pushing the relationship a little too much. That was why I made a choice to wait for her and match her pace she needed without trying to do anything extra. Gold was my ideal lady, her maturity and manners of approach to problems leaves me speechless. She's a genius.
"If you can't like a girl for her looks, go for her brains,"
my dad had always told me before he chose to leave. Luckily, Gold had both. I don't care who I get to fight to keep her, I would fight the whole world to keep her. Not even she can get away from me. I loved her. I wanted her.
Taking Gold out on a date was my biggest joy. But the problem was how to keep things subtle, especially when I loved her so much, I wanted to give her my all. Impressing my queen was something I wanted to ace at . Gold was really different from any other girl I had been in a relationship with, they wanted everything according to their fantasies, and they were all materialistic, they won't mind a date on Mars. I mean it was not impossible I could make it happen, if they're worth it.
That remained a turn off for me, because everyone wanted me for what they can take from me, but Gold wanted me for me. She made me feel like a normal person to be the best I could be. Exactly my personal reason for joining Kyle on his undercover quest. Kyle has a more specific reason for this but me? Not anymore apart from when I was in highschool doing dirty jobs, I was needed for what I did for them back in the hood. I on the other hand was kept on severe surveillance else I spilled the secrets of the hood. I wasn't allowed to be free I was not allowed to mingle with my peers that was why I was always on my own and alone. If I made any mistake in talking to someone that the guys knew nothing about, a total stranger, he would be harmed or I would be seen as a snitch, then subjected to a very serious torture.
I saw what freedom meant when I became friends with Kyle, he lived the kind of life a normal rebellious teenager would live, a growing teenager who would rebel normally and get to have choices.
I wanted that kind of life. That was why when he asked a random street kid like me to join him to the club that night I didn't hesitate. I liked how he agreed to my idea of faking our ages, me taking his name and he taking mine. We went bowling, shopping too, he wanted to mess with his dad so much that his dad thought his card was stolen when we made use of it and send security and some cops to check it out.
Kyle made me come to life, with just a call, the clothes I had to wear, the car we had to pull up in. It happened that he wanted to mess with his dad by using his card but he didn't know how to get his dad worked up, I was the random accomplice, the brain. Apparently, that was how I met Kyle.
I will never forget that one sentence.
"Do you want the world for a night?" Kyle had asked me as he drove by in his monster Royce that particular evening when I returned from my lair at the school rooftop. We ended up paying for the drinks of everyone that night and successfully left just before the police showed up. From then on we became friends, he even picked me up from school everyday. Kyle had shown me a picture of his dad's face when his bank alerted him of the huge debit. Kyle had personally set up a camera for that. We still laugh at that picture. I don't know how he managed to stay undercover for such a long time but I know that When he chooses someone, he knows how to keep his people, that was why I really lost it when he took Gold out that day.
I don't know the deal my parents had with Ladybird but they came for me and Ladybird let me go that easily. It's not easy for one to just leave the hood, my parents must have given her the whole world or possibly they've made her a good deal. They told me I was free to live a normal life and not like a sewer mouse anymore. I know I can but I am tired of people telling me what to do. I want to call the shots this time, I want to do things when I want to not when I am told to. That was why I agreed to Kyle's undercover scheme to stall the billionaire lifestyle a little longer. Sometime ago in highschool, my parents were on my neck, bugging me to make my public appearance because some snitches had tipped the papers about my existence and they were being pestered every day by paparazzi. I convinced my dad to buy them over and take the news down and the only media house that was able to get my picture, went out of business for alleged integrity issues.
Meeting Gold, was like having the moon to myself. I wanted to give her the best but I was scared for her reaction when she would find out everything. Her reaction when I sent her the dress was a close call. She didn't even want to wear the dress. If I wasn't smart enough not to follow my initial plan but to make everything look subtle, plus the old couple act was a bonus for a normal date night. She even wanted to pay, I saw the guilt in her eyes, which only disappeared after I asked the waiter to take it as a tip. she must have been crying for my wallet too when the drones went off in the sky. I tried hard to stifle my laughter and the urge to show her who I really am that the ferry we stood in was actually mine. That the Bentley we rode in was mine and the invoice I got from Kyle was faked. I guess I have to wait for her own timeline before I tell her. Poor Gold, she must have thought I was an average guy she was dating.
Kyle's call brought me out of my thoughts.
" Yo! Eric, want to take the world for a night?" Kyle said in his signature raspy voice, once I picked up the call. I was in the middle of a meeting with the manager of the IT department of SplashTube in his office and it was getting really stodgy. The man was typing away rapidly on his computer without saying a word to me.
"Absolutely" I said and rounded up the meeting and stepped out. When Kyle uses his favorite line, there's bound to be joy. I met Kyle at Y & Z, a perfect club for both the regular and the exotic, when I arrived the show was about to kick off.
