Present Day, 2019. New York, USA.
"Open up, Matt!" Lucas pounded on the door impatiently. A little rustle of lock and bolt came from the other side of the door before it swung open and Lucas pushed his way through without waiting on the invite.
"Daddy issues?" Mateo asked with a smirk and Lucas glared at him.
"Why the f**k didn't you warn me about the s**t I was signing up for" he accused.
"I did" came Mateo's ever blunt reply.
Lucas' mother, Agata, had fallen head over heels for Derek Devon and married him whilst remaining oblivious to the man's underground activities as leader of one of the most powerful Mafia syndicates in the world. Despite being in Agata's good books, Derek had been unable to win over her ten-year-old son and the rocky relationship had inadvertently worsened with time.
An eighteen-year-old rebellious Lucas had been drunk driving the city's streets when he'd gotten into a minor accident with Mateo's oncoming vehicle. Mateo had aided the boy that night while he'd spoken hell about his miserable life and his stepfather. Irrespective of the four-year age gap, the two had been inseparable ever since.
"Well, you did a bad job at convincing me not to" Lucas scoffed, slumping onto the living room couch.
"I told you he was a bad man who did bad things, for all the worst reasons" Mateo countered.
"You told me there were cool guns and s**t!"
"And what the f**k do you think bad men do with guns? You're not some eighteen-year-old kid anymore, Lucas". Mateo strode to the fridge, retrieving a pack of six beer cans.
"You said you've been working with Derek since you were fifteen" Lucas sat up as the realization sank "You've been in this s**t long before you were even classified as an adult?!"
"Yup," Mateo cracked a beer open and took a long satisfying gulp.
"That asshole exploits children?!" Lucas freaked and Mateo just stared at him. "We have to take him down. We can't just do nothing!"
Mateo chuckled at that.
"You find this funny? They deal drugs, take lives at will, exploit kids... name it! And you have known all the while and did nothing??" Lucas pounded his fist on the beer table.
"My hands are tied" Mateo simply stated
"Bullshit! You literally have nothing to lose. Unless, you don't see wrong in any of this" For the first time in the nine years they've known each other, Lucas looked at Mateo in a different light.
Mateo let out a dark chuckle "Now he thinks I'm just like his evil daddy. I'm nothing like that man" he spat.
"Then why do stand by and fold your arms?" Lucas rose to his feet and Mateo followed suit, his heated gaze trained on Lucas.
"Because contrary to what you f*****g believe, I have everything to lose!"
"What are you talking about?" Lucas asked while Mateo retook his seat, gulping the remaining contents of his beer and crushing the can. "Fine then. Don't tell me, I'll do it myself".
"He'll kill you where you stand before you even think about it" Mateo rubbed a stubble on his chin
"We live under a roof" Lucas' eyes narrowed "I can gather every incriminating evidence and-"
"And what? And take it to the police?" Mateo's laugh resonated deeply
"It's okay to be naive when you’re young and adorable, Lucas. You're neither of those things now. Derek f*****g controls the police, he owns the authorities. He's accumulated loads of power before you were ever conceived. Don't make a rash decision you'll regret". Mateo warned. "With the trouble you've caused him over the years, the only reason you still breathe is because he has a soft spot for Agata"
"The only reason he's with my mom is because I love my mom. Shitty as he may be, she's her happiest with him" Lucas grunts.
"Keep living in your delusional world, kid"
"I'm a grown man"
"Then start acting like it"
"You mean, do nothing" Lucas rolled his eyes throwing himself on the couch again.
"Welcome to Bloodstone Mafia" Mateo tossed him a beer.
...
"How did Alias Enterprises get signed, over our company? We had the the lead!" Varya tossed the offensive document to the ground, her eyes narrowing into slits as she demanded from the secretary, Jeane.
"I don't know how it happened Miss Devon, but 70% of their proposal was a duplicate of ours when I ran it by the quality assurance team. It didn't help that they beat us to it" Jeane explained, equally baffled by the news that morning.
"That project came off solely on fresh ideas. This is piracy of some sort" Varya paced in her office.
She had just been appointed CEO and she was determined to prove she was worthy of the title yet everything kept going south. Especially, with the company stocks gradually plummeting. It was as if someone was intentionally sabotaging her effor-
She halted. Dammit.
"We have a mole" she whipped around to face Jeane.
"You're suggesting someone's leaking the company's secrets to our rivals?"
"I'm not suggesting, Jeane. I'm certain"
"But that has never happened before".
"Exactly," she said picking her bag up off the desk as she bolted out of the office. A confused Jeane trailed behind her as they made it to the elevator on her office floor. "And when I find out who the rat is, they'll beg for death" she promised.
Jeane began, "Miss Devon, I don't think-"
"Oh and, keep whatever happens next between us for now, would you?" Varya interrupted and Jeane nodded as she pondered what went on in the young miss' head.
Varya made her way to the floor directly below. If the company had a mole who didn't want to see her succeed then it had to be one of the editors. They were the only group of people with direct access to all company Intel.
The elevator dinged open to the editing floor and her heels clicked against the floor as she made it to the open office.
"Ask the managing director of the editorial team to meet me here" she ordered Jeane while she stepped into the office of the workers and a few interns.
Jeane gave a firm nod before departing to the other office on the floor.
A few moments later, everyone was gathered. The atmosphere was pensive, as the staff wondered what was going on. "Good morning all," Varya started and without waiting for a response, she continued, "It has come to my knowledge that someone amongst you has been providing our rival company information, that could potentially ruin us" she stated, her gaze sweeping across the room and observing each of them. The room ensued into indistinct murmuring as the lot questioned how factual the young miss' accusation was since this had never happened before.
"I suggest the perpetrator comes clean now and I just might spare them, rather than putting me through the struggle of fishing you out myself".
"Miss Devon," Tabitha spoke up and Varya's eyes trained on her "We all want what's best for the company. Why would we sabotage it?" She asked.
"Because a few people still don't believe, I'm what's best for the company". Varya replied and after a moment of silence, she stalked towards them "Fine then, we're doing this the hard way. In a line, everybody!" She announced and everyone quickly filed into a straight line "That includes you, Mr Bennett" she looked over her shoulder at the manager whose eyes flared in surprise before sauntering over to the rest to join them in line.
And so Varya's interrogation commenced.
After ten minutes of questioning, Varya took a couple of steps back with a heavy sigh, some workers relieved that it had come to an end and no one was found wanting. However, Varya stunned them to silence once more when she swiftly retrieved a gun from her purse and pulled the trigger. The room erupted into panic as a man on the left crumpled to the ground screaming in pain and clutching the leg where the bullet had lodged.
Varya chuckled darkly, "Did you think you got away, Mr Duff?"
"What the f**k!" Garrett cried in pain as his body trembled on the ground, blood quickly staining the tiles.
"Why did you do it?" She stormed towards him.
"I- I had no choice," he said through clenched teeth.
"There's always a choice. You deliberately put the company in jeopardy to sabotage me" she spoke with an eerie calm, while the man screamed in pain. "Jeane"
"Y-Yes Miss" Jeane stuttered, her eyes wide in fear at the sudden turn of events as she remained rooted to the spot.
"Page security to come to tidy this up" she instructed, shoving her stealth gun into her bag and turning on her heels to leave.
"This was unnecessary". A resolute voice stopped her.
