The First Test

The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the penthouse dining room, mingling with the faint tang of citrus from the silver platter of fruit laid neatly on the long polished table. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, gilding the room in gold. Elena sat at the far end of the table, dressed in a pale lavender blouse and pencil skirt Adrian’s assistant had placed on her bed that morning. She smoothed her palms against the fabric, trying to steady her nerves. The clothes fit perfectly, but the skin underneath felt restless, foreign. She hadn’t seen Adrian since dawn. When she asked the maid where he was, the woman had replied simply, “Mr. Blackwood has arranged a meeting for you.” A meeting. Alone. Her pulse skipped at the sound of the elevator chiming. The doors slid open, and in stepped a man whose presence immediately set her on edge. Tall, broad-shouldered, with a silver streak cutting through his dark hair. His tailored suit was immaculate, but it was his eyes—sharp, cold, assessing—that unsettled her most. He carried himself like a man who didn’t need to announce his power. It radiated off him in waves. “Elena Cruz,” he said, his voice deep and smooth, though there was an edge to it, like a knife wrapped in velvet. “Or should I say… Mrs. Blackwood?” She rose quickly, forcing a polite smile. “Good morning. Please, have a seat.” The man’s lips twitched, amused by her formality. He lowered himself into the chair opposite her, stretching long legs with casual ease. “I’m Victor Hale,” he said. “Old friend of Adrian’s.” The way he said friend made her stomach tighten. There was nothing friendly in his tone. “I see.” She clasped her hands together on the table to hide their tremor. Victor leaned back, studying her like a specimen under glass. “I must admit, I didn’t expect Adrian to marry. Ever. Certainly not so suddenly.” Her throat tightened. Smile. Be calm. Don’t falter. She heard Adrian’s rules echo in her head. “Sometimes life surprises us,” she said, forcing her voice steady. Victor’s smirk deepened. “Does it? Or did Adrian surprise you?” Her heart pounded. She wanted to shrink beneath his gaze, but she straightened her shoulders instead. “We surprised each other.” Victor chuckled lowly, swirling the coffee the maid had poured for him. “You’re quick. That’s good. You’ll need to be.” Elena frowned. “What do you mean?” He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “You think Adrian chose you because of love? No. He chose you because you can be useful—or because you’re harmless. Which one is it, I wonder?” Her palms dampened. She forced herself to meet his gaze. “Maybe he chose me because I’m not afraid to stand beside him.” For the first time, Victor’s smirk faded. His eyes gleamed with something sharper—curiosity, maybe even respect. He set down his cup, steepling his fingers beneath his chin. “You’re bold,” he said softly. “I can see why he picked you. But boldness will get you killed in this world if you don’t learn how to wield it.” Before Elena could respond, a presence filled the room. Adrian. He strode in silently, his tailored charcoal suit crisp, his expression carved from stone. His gaze swept over the table, first to Victor, then to Elena. “Victor,” he said coolly. “I see you’ve made yourself at home.” Victor rose leisurely, unbothered. “Just getting acquainted with your wife. She’s… interesting.” Adrian’s eyes flicked to Elena, dark and unreadable, before settling back on Victor. “She’s off-limits.” The words were quiet, but the steel beneath them was unmistakable. Victor smirked again, slipping on his jacket. “Relax, Adrian. I was just testing her. She passed. For now.” He brushed past Adrian, pausing just long enough to murmur in his ear, “But you and I both know the wolves are circling. Let’s hope she doesn’t slow you down.” Then he was gone, the sound of the elevator doors closing echoing in his wake. The silence he left behind was heavy, suffocating. Elena turned toward Adrian, her chest tight. “You set me up.” He didn’t flinch. “I gave you a test.” Her voice rose. “A test? He was tearing me apart with his questions. He—he knew this wasn’t real. He sensed it. And you just left me there!” Adrian’s eyes locked onto hers, cold and unyielding. “And yet, you survived.” Her breath caught. “You kept your composure,” he continued. “You gave him answers that didn’t crumble. You showed him strength. That is exactly why I left you alone. Because in this world, Elena, no one will hold your hand. You either sink—or you learn to swim.” Her hands shook, anger bubbling beneath her skin. “I’m not your soldier. I’m not your… pawn in this game.” Adrian stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. “You’re my wife. And that makes you both.” Her heart pounded painfully, caught between fury and something she couldn’t name. His presence was overwhelming, suffocating, but also magnetic. She swallowed hard. “And what if I decide not to play by your rules?” His lips curved, not into a smile but into something darker. “Then you’ll discover just how unforgiving I can be.” The words lingered between them, sharp as a blade. For a moment, neither moved. His gaze pinned her in place, her breath shallow, her pulse unsteady. And then, just as suddenly, he stepped back, turning away. “You did well today,” he said, his tone clipped. “But this was only the beginning.” Elena stood frozen, her mind reeling. If this was the beginning, what would the end look like? **** That night, long after Adrian disappeared into his office, Elena found herself back in the library. She pressed her forehead against the cool spines of the books, her thoughts spinning. Victor’s words haunted her: useful or harmless. Which one was she? She clenched her fists. No. She refused to be either. She would not be just a pawn, not be swallowed by Adrian’s rules or Victor’s tests. If Adrian wanted her to survive in his world, then she would learn. Not just to swim. But to fight. And one day, when the time was right, she would break free of the chains he had so carefully locked around her.
