Chapter 10

Chapter 10 ~ROSALIE~ Hathaway finally appeared from the house, wrapped in a lemon green working apron and pink laundry gloves, with tired folds of sweat lined-up on her forehead. And a memory of my mother quickly flashed through my mind. She'd spent everyday, working tirelessly to sustain our good faith in the eyes of the alpha even though he was already kind and generous enough, just to make sure I got the best life she couldn't afford to give me on her own. She never dragged things with anyone, never stepped on anyone's shoes without an apology, or even tried to abuse her position as the head-omega by mistreating the other omegas. Yet they dared to repay her in such an evil manner. My mother didn't deserve to be killed. She never deserved death for any reason! The more I thought about it over the years as I grew older and wiser in wisdom, I realised it wasn't just a coincidence when all the omegas suddenly disappeared that miserable afternoon. They all knew something and kept it away, giving fake eulogies at her funeral and wearing fake sentiments, when their hearts were in fact pure evil. I just needed to figure out what mother hid in that box. I believe its contents must be connected to the roots of her death. A strained smile spread on Hathaway's face from all the stress as she approached us. “You're done. How was breakfast at the Alpha family's table?’’ Terrible! I wanted to say so badly. But on a second thought I shrugged. “It wasn't so bad, except I'm not exactly the favourite person they’d like to have in their midst.’’ ‘‘Ugh. You trust I don't already know that?’’ She rolled her eyes, then looked from me to Mason and back to me. “But why are you here though? To see me?’’ I squeezed Mason's palm. “We'll be staying here at the omegas quarters from now on.’’ ‘‘Really?’’ Her eyes widened. “You weren't expecting me to accept to stay at the main house even if anyone proposed it.’’ Now it was my turn to roll my eyes, brushing past her towards the omegas building with Mason. She quickly caught up by my side. ‘‘Yeah right. You can't. This means we'll have to prepare a space for you then.’’ “How about my mother's room? I could use that.’’ ‘‘Your mother's room?’’ How foreign it sounded on her lips made me stop walking to look dead at her. “Maybe we could ask Madame Ohk about it. What space was it again?’’ She resumed walking faster and I followed. ‘‘I know it would've probably been moved but it used to be the first quarter.’’ “Oh right.” Her eyes grew wide. “Goddess! That space has been taken by Madame Ohk now.” “So what now?’’ Mason asked, fed up with the back and forth until now. ‘‘I mean… maybe it was moved like you said. Give me a minute let me speak with Madame Ohk.’’ She hurried into the quarters. In about ten minutes, Hathaway returned, without the laundry gloves now and with Mrs Ohk behind her. Now that I saw her, I instantly recognised the name. She was a senior to my mother back then. According to the news on the walls, she'd been the one in charge of the omegas before my mother came in, hence the ill relationship between them. Disgust flushed through me as I watched her approach us in the head-omega uniforms. Purple dress, gray overlay, and a matching purple beret. Was this what she wanted? The head-omega position back? Was that why she hurt my mother? Was this a valid enough reason? Recognition slowly snagged her gaze as they met mine and I saw surprise flicker through them, but it disappeared almost immediately as she acknowledged Mason. ‘‘I didn't think you'd come back here after losing your mother like that. It's good to see that you moved on fine.’’ She said, eyes tracing my body. “That is the first thing you get to say to me after six years.’’ I smiled, but it didn't reach my eyes. She looked around without remorse, as if searching for the fault. “Did I say anything wrong? I mean nobody would've thought you'd be back here to work as an omega again despite all the study abroad in the humans world.’’ ‘‘Oh I see your point now. You're actually wrong, Mrs Ohk…’’ “It's Madame now. I run the quarters!’’ She snapped, not hiding the venom in her eyes. “There again, I don't think I'm obligated to address you that way since I won't be working under your wings as an omega.’’ I let my smile flutter my face now, loving how I was about to break her expectations. Nothing was more satisfying than the confusion that twisted on her face. “What are you talking about?’’ Mason took over now, shielding me behind himself as he stepped forward. “The Alpha has permitted us to stay here for the meantime while I search for a suitable place outside the packhouse to live with my girlfriend. During this time, she is not obligated to serve you in any way. I'm afraid it's the other way around instead.’’ She squeezed her fists, visibly fuming but didn't dare to question him. It was no longer news by now to what extent the Alpha favored me, and that exactly was the root of their vendetta towards me and my late mother back then. “Now show us to her mother's space before we have news sent to the Alpha that you've been harassing us.’’ Mason added coldly, forcing her out of whatever power tussle she was going to flaunt. “That space wasn't designated for her mother. It's a general space that is meant to be occupied by anyone who becomes the head lady around here.’’ “Where was my mother's stuff moved to?’’ I asked. “I'm afraid there is no such thing. Every space here is occupied. I'll need to have someone evacuate their room to make chance for you both.’’ Mrs Ohk explained coldly. “W-what?’’ I staggered forward. “What do you mean ‘there is no such thing’?” “Everything was burnt down with the alpha's approval. We didn't see it necessary to keep the belongings of a dead woman. Besides, there wasn't even enough space to think of storing it.’’ My knees grew weak, every last hope of basking in my mother's memories disappearing before my face. But most especially, the pieces we came back to find. How do we go about that now? “Rosalie!’’ Mason yelled, catching me before I collapsed to the floor.
