~ROSALIE~
Six years of freedom, equality, and belonging. Nothing could compare to the peace I found in the human world.
I'd imagined this day countless nights—the day I would finally return to the pack, transformed from the helpless omega they all tormented into a woman with a strong and defensive wolf.
I would be twenty-one in a few months. I should've gotten my wolf about three years ago.
But there's still nothing inside me. Just hollow silence.
Unfortunate as always. Except I was no longer alone. I got myself a boyfriend. A werewolf boyfriend who loves me as much as I love him too. And he was coming back with me to the pack.
“Are you okay?’’ Mason creased his brows, noticing my stare as he joined me in the car.
“I'm just glad you're with me.’’
He smiled, resting his hand on the back of my palm. “It's okay. You've got me now.”
The most beautiful part? He knew everything about me. The fact that I was practically wolfless, the bullying from the pack, and especially the Alpha's triplet.
Mason knew all about it. Yet he never stared at me with pity.
I smiled as he started the car. Then my eyes fell on the red A4 size box on the dashboard. I'd dropped it there earlier. The box my mother tried so desperately to hide, she exhausted her last breaths stuffing it into my backpack.
I believe whatever was in that box contained the details connected to her death. Mason didn't think otherwise too. We spent twelve months trying to get the mysterious unlock pass code that I'd have probably known if I hadn't rushed out that evening only to return to my mother's dead corpse.
Mason suggested we might find the pieces back in the pack which I agree isn't a bad idea. Maybe the answers really waited back at the pack.

~IAN~
Shrill screams filled the air. The louder it got, the more irritated I became. I signaled Preston with two fingers to stop the torture.
The lycan bastard fell onto the floor immediately, spilling blood endlessly from his mouth.
‘‘Where is the rest of your gang?’’ I asked again, hoping he would speak this time or he'd be kissing the dust.
He gurgled, vomiting more blood and not a word.
“Do you need water? Get him a glass.’’ I ordered the Deltas by his sides.
“Forget it!” He finally spoke, getting back to his knees. “The killings on Clawville road, you think we don't know?’’
‘‘What does that have to do with my question?’’
“Everything! You scrawny wolves are the ones responsible for it, and we'll make you pay until the last one of us.’’ He spat, glaring at me in the eyes.
A wry scoff escaped my lips.
This was it. No fruit was coming off him. “Kill him.’’
Preston stepped forward with slight hesitation. The lycan's cries followed me out of the torture room as I walked out to my car.
Father had called another meeting and I was ten minutes late already. Not that I'd ever cared, but it'd be more humiliating for me, to join Beta James in preparing the festival for tonight's mating ceremony.
“What hotel is it this time?’’ Cas chimed in through the mindlink and I almost lost control of my steering.
‘‘The f**k man, there's no f*****g hotel!’’
‘‘Then where the hell are you? Father's
getting really mad.’’
‘‘I'm almost there.’’
“Get here in ten minutes.’’ He ended the mindlink.
In exactly twenty-three minutes, I arrived at the mansion, ignoring every greetings until I reached the meeting courtroom. Two pairs of angry eyes welcomed me when I walked in—father's and Cassian’s.
Cassian and Orsian sat across from Father's desk. There's an empty seat between them which I suppose was meant for me.
“Good morning, Father.’’ I avoided their gazes.
“I guess I'll be heading out now.’’ Orsian stood. From the looks of things, they were done with the meeting already. I stepped aside as Orsian walked out and shut the door.
‘‘How is the preparation for tonight going?’’ Father directed at me.
I fought the urge to hiss. We prepared for the mating ceremony for eight years just to watch other wolves find their mates. Why would I want to participate in such humiliation again?
“Leave it to me, Father. I'll talk to him.” Cas offered.
Silence.
Then Father's movement as he stood and rounded his table, towards the door. He stared shortly at me before exiting the room.
“You know I have better things to deal with right?’’ I said once we were alone.
‘‘Father wants us to pick someone.’’ Cas said instead, not sounding very convinced himself. I knew that countenance. I immediately knew it was bad news.
‘‘Who?’’
‘‘Rosalie.’’
‘‘Who's Rosalie?’’
He frowned, but went on to explain anyway. “The late housekeeper's daughter.’’
We've only had one housekeeper. The name became familiar now. The fat omega.
‘‘Wtf?’’
“We have to get moving. She'll arrive at the airport in ten minutes.’’ He stood.
‘‘There's no way you agreed to that.’’
His jaw clenched in a seamless attempt to hide his embarrassment. ‘‘It's either that or you join Beta James in preparing the ceremony.’’
Was that really it, or just his loyalty card on duty?
By now it wasn't foreign knowledge how diligent and tenacious he was with his role as next in line for Alpha. He'd twist into any curves to accomplish father's bidding in the name of adherence to duties.
Still, I'd trade anything to avoid the ceremony preparations.
Cas brushed past me out of the courtroom, piecing his answers from my silence. I followed him out, then I noticed him heading towards my car.
“Wait, we're taking my car?’’ Horror flashed before my eyes, imagining that ugly fatty seating in my car and contaminating the air with omega stench.
“Last time I checked, my car conked out at a hotel and is currently at the mechanic.” Cas answered without stopping till he got to the car. “Can I have the keys if you're not coming?’’
The drive to the airport was usually quiet. I can't say for Cas, but I'm stuck wondering why that omega has to return and why we're the ones picking her up.
Would she keep living with us and mooching off of father's generosity like she always has? Not my problem but I've got enough headache to deal with already, adding one more isn't exactly appealing.
I stared at my wristwatch the fourth time.
Twenty minutes had passed. Still no sign of the omega.
“You said she was going to arrive in ten minutes. It's been approximately thirty since we left the house.’’
“I'm equally frustrated here.’’ Cas countered back almost immediately.
“Is this worth it? She's not some important guest who can't get home herself.’’
“It was father's instruction not mine.’’
‘‘Exactly my point. You should've pointed that out when he passed such insolent instruction.’’
Cas jerked up suddenly, squinting in that unmistakable manner when things were about to get serious. I traced his gaze through the glass to see a gorgeous chubby brunette in fitted gold sequin dress.
At first, I couldn't believe he was admiring a f*****g woman right now. Then my heart stopped when I saw her eyes.
The only brunette I knew who had green eyes. The reason I always called her ugly. Her usually short coffee-brown hair now flowed in long waves, swaying over wide round hips the stunning sequin dress did nothing to hide, as she catwalked towards us.
The next second, the most intoxicating smell hit my nose, musky chocolate and sweet vanilla that instantly made something jerk inside me.
Skal. My wolf.
