Chapter 1

~ROSALIE~ Bang! The table clattered as Ian's fist struck the molded plastic and my spoon jumped out of my hand. Silence instantly swallowed the cafeteria. ‘‘How dare you eat, didn’t we have a deal yesterday?’’ He thundered. I gulped. How foolish of me to think I could avoid them. The Alpha triplet always managed to find me even among a sand of students. They say my unmistakable omega stench always gave me away. Still I'd tried to hide after failing to buy the pack of condoms they'd ordered me to get on my way to school. Not like they were going to use it. The last time I'd fought tooth and nails to get a pack of cigarettes for them, they'd emptied it on the ground and smashed every stick under their foot. They knew I didn't have money. But they never cared. The thought that their housekeeper's daughter attended the same academy as them simply irritated them. “I..I'm sorry.” I choked on my voice, knowing how much they detest hearing those pathetic words laced with baseless excuse. Ian snapped my chin up, his nails biting into my skin. I dreaded those dark blue eyes more than death itself, gleaming with anger and repulsion. “You dirty fat weasel. You had just one task and you failed.” “Relax Ian. Maybe she has a good reason.’’ Cassian, the eldest triplet slurred mischievously, circling me like a cat observing a dead rat. The cafeteria had resumed chattering like nothing was happening. Not because the other students were scared of intervening. Just because nobody simply cared. I was the triplets’ to deal with since their father granted me the unearned scholarship to study here. A place that was never meant for omegas to step their feets, let alone have their name in the registers. “I..I didn't have money.’’ My lips trembled as I fight back my tears. “Right. And you must be hungry too.’’ Cassian waved over for a plate of peppered beef sauce, stretching a chunk to my lips. “Let's see how much your fat mouth can take.” ‘‘P..lease…’’ I whispered. Irritation flashed his face. “Take the damn thing.’’ I opened my mouth. He stuck the beef. Then another chunk. And another. By the fifth one, my cheeks hurts from swelling. My eyes pricked with peppery tears as the beef sauce cascaded down my throat. “I've got water here.’’ Kiara, Ian's self-acclaimed girlfriend, called out from the fridge, smiling snidely. “Go get it.’’ Cassian nudged his chin. I rushed without thinking, but Kiara stuck her leg in my way. I tripped over with a heavy thud. “Yuck. Did you hear that? The sound of a pig falling.’’ Laughter erupted around the cafeteria like needles in my ears. “Pathetic.’’ I heard Ian curse. I crouched to my feet and bolted, hiding my tears in the curtains of my short hair. It's enough that they had fun humiliating me everyday. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of seeing me breakdown. I bumped into someone by the glass exit before realizing and a stack of books rained to the floor. The gasps that rippled through the cafeteria instantly confirmed his chilly wood scent. Orsian. The third and quiet triplet. Who never walked with his brothers yet he was the scariest of them. His rule was simple. “Make sure we never cross paths.’’ And the school had been big enough to accommodate that. Unfortunately not today. I staggered back, and the blood left my face when I noticed a brown stain on his delicate beige sweatshirt. His coffee had spilled on it. I fall on my knees, my breaths shallow as I gathered the books with shaky hands. I was sorry. But sorry never curbed the deed here. His silhouette grew over me as he bent to my level. The next minute, warm liquid spilled over my head. His coffee. Streaming down my face to my skirt. He dumped the plastic cup on my head and it bounced off to the floor. “You can keep the books.’’ He stood and left. ******** As I walked home, I thought about my mother's face filled with excitement each time I left for school. She was the only reason I endured all the bullying, comforting myself with hopes that the triplets would leave for college soon. But Kiara had one more year. I slipped in through the back gate to the omegas quarters. Ours was the first room since my mother was the head-omega. Everywhere was empty, like all the omegas had suddenly taken a leave off duty. I ignored it and dusted my shoes, entering the room. My face instantly turned pale when I saw my mother twisting painfully on the floor with froth dripping from her mouth. “Mother!!’’ I rushed to hold her. And I noticed she was struggling to get something from the bedside cabinet. I looked around frantically. A bowl of half-eaten porridge sat cold on the table. She'd been poisoned. “No! Somebody help me.’’ I cried and almost bolted out but she caught my arm before I leave, barely catching her breaths. “You have to leave, Rosalie.” She placed a square red box in my hand with trembling fingers. “You must keep this before anyone finds it. Don't take chances…’’ She gasped, more froth gurgling up her mouth. “No. Please.’’ I jerked away from her, racing out to get help while it was still early. I rushed to the main house. Luckily Alpha Alaric sat with Beta James at the portico. They both looked up as I rushed in. “Please. Help me. My mother…’’ Seeing the panic on my face, they didn't wait. We all hurried back to the quarters. My stomach twisted when I noticed my mother laying still on the floor. I tried to go in but Alpha Alaric stopped me, while Beta James went over to check the situation. My heart hammered against my chest, the silence closing in on me as Beta James examined her body. His shoulders fell, and he slowly looked up at Alpha Alaric, shaking his head. I dreaded the meaning behind that gesture,, then his words finally struck me. “She's gone.”
