Chapter 2

~ROSALIE~ Alpha Alaric quickly took me away from the scene, as if to shield me from the formidable sight I could never unsee. I sat across from him in the study. My face numb with trails of dry tears and my heart empty. My fingers trembled on my thighs under the table, counting how many possible fates awaited me hereon. Alpha Alaric watched me with sympathetic eyes, swallowing back his voice every time he tried to speak. As if he couldn't find the best words to approach me. All my life, I've always had to receive pity. Now it no longer fazed me. “She was a good woman.” He finally found the words, his voice soft and levelled. Of course my mother was. It was her goodness that guided me this far. Everyone pretended to accept and respect us because she had saved the Alpha years ago, and he was too grateful. He took us in and sheltered us, and provided everything we needed to be comfortable. But now the saviour was gone. And what was left was me, a liability. ‘‘This is not the end. I'll still protect and care for you like I've done till now. It is a debt I owe your mother even in death.’’ Alpha Alaric countered as if he'd read my thoughts. I looked up at him briefly, afraid to let him see the gratitude that flashed in my eyes. ‘‘Y-you will?’’ He would still cater for a freeloader like me? Who contributed nothing to his life yet reaped the most out of his gratitude? He nodded gently. “Sure. I'm sure if your mother could trade herself for you, she would do it a thousand times again. What use is it then if I can't care for you when she's gone?’’ A tear slipped from my eye and I wiped it off quickly, my tongue too heavy to let any words out of my lips.. “I'll prepare a room for you in the main house. You can pack in with us so you don't think too much about your mother. Still, you must know your place and avoid irritating anyone during your stay.’’ The soft manner he said it made it strike less harmful and forgivable. Like vermin clothed in grace. Any omega would jump at the offer right now, and I would've done the same. But my head disagreed faster than my thoughts, shaking frantically. Alpha Alaric frowned. ‘‘Why?’’ ‘‘I…I would prefer moving to the humans world instead.’’ I gulped, but his frown only deepened more in surprise and confusion. ‘‘I think it'd be more convenient. Everyone in the main house wouldn't have to deal with me and… I also believe it will help me move on faster.’’ I pinched my thighs, fighting the heat that threatened to pool up in my face. Those were all lies. The truth was my nemesis. The triplets. The thought of sharing a roof with them left cold on my skin. It was bad enough that I had to face them everyday at school, playing a dangerous game of hide and seek where the ‘seek’ always won. Living with them in the same building would be sleeping and waking up in the grip of my nemeses. Alpha Alaric's face knotted in pure astonishment. Like he was rather impressed than disappointed. He relaxed into his armchair with a soft exhale, his gaze layered on me like a precious piece that had captured his interest. “The human world doesn't sound bad. When will you like to leave?’’ “As soon as my mother is buried.’’ I muttered, making up my mind. She was the only reason I stayed quiet and endured all the painful moments until now. There was nothing left for me here anymore. No matter how bad it might be in the human world, it couldn't be any worse than it is here. At least no one would torture me for being an ‘omega’ over there. Three days rolled away in a flash, each one a glaring reminder that my mother was truly gone. Today I knelt on the sand in a black dress, watching her casket lowered into the ground. The Alpha had been too generous. He even threw a befitting burial for her. In a cemetery where the sky was thick with dark clouds, as though they mirrored the state of my heart, the Alpha family stood behind me in white clothes. He had forced them all to be here today to pay their respect. Alongside some omegas who didn't know the right place to be at the right time. If they hadn't all disappeared that day, my mother could've been saved. When the priest was done with the formal rites, I stumbled forward by the grave, squeezing the sand together with my mothers favourite bracelet in my palm as I fought my tears. A comforting hand touched my shoulder. It was Alpha Alaric, his voice heavy with emotion. “I believe she's in a better place. Focus on making her proud now.’’ I couldn't speak, my voice shadowed by the grief in my heart. I heard Luna Matilda scoff irritably, then her footsteps scratching on the sand announced her leave. She was the triplets mother who had never liked me or my mother, particularly because she detested the idea of Alpha Alaric paying back favors she didn't think we deserved. Beta James appeared forward to drop flowers on the grave. He cast one remorseful glance at me with mist in his eyes. It was hard to tell if he was sad about my mother's death or about how pitiful I looked. The omegas had cleared off almost immediately after the priest left. Beta James soon left with Alpha Alaric to take care of some business. Now I can feel the triplets gaze burning holes into my back but I didn't care. “You know it should've been you under that f*****g sand.’’ Cassian spoke, scoffing. “Then at least we wouldn't have to be here.’’ “Tell me about it.’’ Ian interjected, his voice dripping with frustration and unjustified resentment. “You've been leeching off your mother yet you couldn't take death in her place huh?” “Poor woman. She gave birth to such a leech.’’ Cassian remarked, trying to get under my skin as usual. I tried to ignore them and take it down like I always did. But today I just couldn't. I stood up and faced them, my eyes red with defiance. ‘‘Why do you hate me so much?’’ Through my peripheral, I could see Orsian standing by the side, arms folded. His eyes flickered with something like fascination. Cassian on the other hand was taken aback, momentarily lost for words. And when Ian saw this, he scoffed. “This scrawny omega has got some nerves.’’ “It's not my fault that I was born an omega!’’ I fired Disbelief flashed across his eyes. ‘‘Is it mine then? Or that you're all puffed up with advantages you didn't earn, not knowing your place and how to keep in it?’’ “That's enough, Ian.” Cassian found his voice back, taking Ian's arm. “Let's go.’’ He cast a wary glance at me as they left. Or maybe not. But one thing was certain; he didn't get the satisfaction he desired and that was good enough. I looked over at Orsian, and my breath caught when I met his icy gaze staring back ar me. I turned back quickly to my mother's grave. It's even harder to concentrate knowing his chilling gaze rested on my back. When he thought he had seen enough, he turned and quietly walked away. Now I let out all the tears I'd been holding back, squeezing my mother's bracelet like it could suck up all my grief. “I promise to find who did this to you. I'll survive and make them pay with every last drop of blood.’’
