Chapter 9

Chapter 9 ~ROSALIE~ I pinched my thighs so hard I could tell it'd leave a swell. It's been hard sitting here, trying to appear calm and unaffected, as if Ian and Cassian’s gaze haven't been digging heat on my skin. Mason had noticed how uncomfortable I was, too nervous to even shove a fork down my throat since they watched my every movement. What would I ever do in this house without him? Even right now, Cassian stared my way instead of answering his father. Luna Matilda’s scoff cut the air like a gust of vermin as she munched on some lettuces. “Isn't it obvious? You brought dirt on the table and expect them to eat comfortably? Obviously no one is happy to have that omega here.’’ I swallowed hard, clenching my fork. “That is not it!’’ Cassian snapped, shocking everyone by his sudden hostility. “Can you be nice to her for once, Mother?’’ No one is as stunned as Luna Matilda. “Since when have you bothered about my attitude towards her? You all know how much I detest her and I'm sure it's the same for everyone else on this table.’’ Her eyes suddenly darkened as a realisation occurred to her. “Don't tell me you're shaken by her now?” My heart spiked. Cassian turned ashen, struck between denying the absurd claims and admitting it which I doubted and hoped wouldn't be his final choice of action. “C'mon Mother.’’ Louisa finally intervened with a soft chuckle, saving the moment before the questionable silence dragged any longer. “...That is ridiculous.’’ But Luna Matilda wasn't having any responses that didn't come from Cassian. She threw her fork loudly on her plate and darted her darkened gaze to Alpha Alaric. “This is why we can't have her here! She's not just a pathetic runt, but might even end up being a dirty distraction too.’’ “If that is the case, shouldn't your fuss be directed towards your sons then?” Alpha Alaric answered almost unbothered. Unbothered because there really shouldn't have been anything to bother about. Men like Ian, Orsian and Cassian who had everything, would never look at inferior girls like me. Louisa was an obvious testimony to that. Perfect. Sophisticated. Divas. Yet it all seemed so wrong right now. “I don't care what you say. We can't have her in this house. I won't allow it!’’ Luna Matilda insisted, yelling. I hated to think about the way things were escalating because of me. I wasn't that important to stir a feud in a space where my status doesn't even fit in. “Er… I'm sorry Alpha, I should've said this earlier, but I don't intend to live here in the main house either. I don't deserve it. If you will permit, myself and Mason would love to lodge in the omegas quarters, until we gather enough money to rent a house for ourselves. Then we'll leave immediately. Please alpha, grant me this last favour. I promise to disappear from then onwards.’’ I proposed. Just enough time to find the pieces of leads that could help us unlock my mother's box and expose her killer. I need just till then, then we'll leave for Mason's pack where we plan to spend the rest of our lives together. Silence befell the room now, Luna Matilda watching with unconvinced gaze still. Cassian stopped, staring long and hard at me with his fork frozen in hand. I didn't spare the slightest glance his way. Alpha Alaric however, once again, seemed impressed after a long hard minute of processing. “You have always been a smart kid, Rosalie. I'll give you that.’’ He commended, cutting a slice off steak and shoving it into his mouth. “What's that you studied at college again?’’ ‘‘Company and business management. It is a broad field that covers various departments in a firm.’’ I explained, adjusting on my seat. ‘‘Right. And the young man? You name again?’’ “Oh, it's Mason sir.’’ Mason cleared his throat, dropping his fork with a light clink. “I studied a bit of tech and engineering, but I'm more active in the tech field. I'm currently working with a human company.’’ “So I'm guessing it's just Rosalie who needs employment here. What do you say to working for the family company? I'll send the information to create a space for you as soon as possible.’’ Alpha Alaric offered over a glass of water, sending a gasp off my lips. “I'm so grateful Alpha. You've done so much for me that I feel so guilty. I'll spend the rest of my life paying you back in every way I can.’’ I squealed lowly, afraid not to overreact. I might not have mentioned it, but who doesn't need a job? Especially if it'll be a means of time away for me from bumping into the triplets and having to deal with their stares all day long. I'd give anything for it! “Thank you alpha. I'll make sure she never takes this chance for granted.’’ Mason added, stroking my hair fondly. I slide my palm into his on the table and squeezed it. Finally something good after so many unfortunate experiences. “Congratulations, Rosalie.’’ Louisa offered with a pretty smile, and my own smile faltered when I looked over to see Cassian fuming beside her, his gaze locked on my intertwined fingers with Mason. “Uh.. thank you, Ms. Louisa.” I turned sharply. “Thank you for the food. We'll like to go and prepare our space in the quarters now.’’ Alpha Alaric gave us the acknowledgement and before the minute stretched any longer, I pulled Mason up and dragged him out of the dining room. We'd had a discussion about how I'd ended up with the triplets at the training quarters last night, and their attitude which Mason totally found questionable. Although I hadn't mentioned that they'd called me their mate, I didn't try to push too hard against it this time when he concluded that they were lusting after me. That would be the only plausible instance to make him believe and it was working just fine. The packhouse had changed quite a bit; after six years there was bound to be a difference. But not enough for me to misplace the routes. I'd spent eleven years of my life running these routes and only six years away from it. Not a chance! Before time, we arrived in front of the omegas quarters. The paintings had changed as well. I wondered by chance if Alpha Alaric kept my mother's room intact with thoughts that I'd be back again to live in it. But I doubt that since they must have a new head-omega by now. I asked after Hathaway and an omega left to call her. She'd have the perfect details about that. But why did I feel so nervous?
