Aria's pov
I took slow fearful steps towards Matty, my heart racing with apprehension as I prayed to the moon goddess it wasn't what I was thinking. Crouching down beside her, I leaned in to hear her breath but I was met with an eerie silence that sent shivers down my spine.
Fear gripped me as I realized she was dead. I jerked back, landing on my butt with a thud.
"No, No. This can't be happening," I whispered, my body trembling as a cold dread enveloped me.
"Matty, please..." I called out in a shaky voice.
Even though she has been nothing short of annoying, I didn't want this to happen. I didn't want Matty dead.
Suddenly, a sharp click sound pierced the air. I jolted in shock and whirled my head around to the direction of the sound.
My eyes widened in shock as I saw the cell door swinging open with no one in sight.
"Gua..Guards. Mat... Matty needs help," I stuttered weakly, hoping someone would come help but just like before, no one responded.
I slowly stood up to my feet and walked towards the door to see if I could urge any of the guards to come help but to my surprise, no one was there.
Thoughts of running away for my freedom filled my mind but I was scared of leaving Matty all alone.
"She is dead Aria. She is dead!" I whispered to myself.
I clamped my shaky hands together, my chest heaving up and down. "You need to leave now, you could be accused of killing her, just like they had done with that guard," I scolded myself weakly.
With one final glance at Matty, I bolted out of the cell, dashing down the corridor, as tears ran down my cheeks, my conscience pricking me for leaving Matty behind.
I had no idea where I was headed as I had never left the Alpha's pack before but I ran nevertheless fueled by the primary urge to flee.
Soon, I was finally beyond the border of the pack and deep inside the forest. I turned back to scan the surroundings for signs of being followed, but there were none.
Relief flooded through me as I plopped down against a tree, my body trembling with exhaustion.
Tears flowed down my cheeks as the events of the day flooded my mind.
Where do I go now? I had no one to run to and no pack to go to. If I don't get bonded to a pack soon, I will become a rogue or be killed out here.
I buried my head in my lap, longing for my parents as my tears flowed seamlessly.
The sound of leaves ruffling made me jolt up in shock, since I had no wolf, my sense of smell was almost non-existent.
I glanced around in panic, searching frantically for any sign of an intruder. The sound of wolf snarls filled the air and I took in a deep breath, my insides trembling in fear.
Four wolves came into view and I could immediately tell they were rogues! My heart thudded in my chest as I fearfully stumbled backward, my eyes darting between the wolves who were closing in on me.
Desperation clawed at me as I searched frantically for a way out but the wolves had formed a circle around me, leaving me feeling like a trapped mouse.
"Moon goddess please, just this one..." I whispered in tears but like always, she ignored me.
Just as I shut my eyes and braced myself for the impact of whatever was coming, a commanding voice cut through the air.
"Don't you dare! She's ours!"
I slowly opened my eyes and saw that the wolves had focused their attention on the owner of the voice.
Without a second thought, I ran, my heart thudding viciously in my chest as my legs synched with the earth's rhythm.
Suddenly, I collided with an obstacle that made me fall butt-flat to the ground, making me yelp in pain. Blinking away my tears, I looked up, expecting to see a tree but instead, I was faced with a guard who had a deathly look in his eyes.
I swallowed hard, scrambling backward in fear. Just as I tried to rise to my feet, he struck me hard with a silver chain.
Pain rushed through me, igniting a burning sensation behind my eyes as I cried out loudly in pain. Ignoring my cries of pain, the guard crouched down beside me and rained down multiple punches on my face.
With each punch, my world spun and my tears dried up. I was completely exhausted, I just wanted a break from all of this and if being dead would grant me the peace I want, then so be it.
Suddenly, just as it had begun, the punching ceased. Gasping for breath, I glanced up at the guard through my swollen blurry eyes, wondering if he had decided to show me mercy and let me live.
My eyes caught sight of an object glinting in his hands and I squinted my eyes, trying to make out what it was.
A stray tear rolled down my cheeks as realization dawned on me.
It was a syringe.
The guard glanced down at me with a smile on his lips. "Do not hate me for this."
Sniffling, I shut my eyes tightly, ready to welcome whatever fate had in store for me.
I bit my bottom lips as the syringe punctured my skin, sending me into a spiral of pain.
