Shadows of the Empire

The throne room echoed with the footsteps of the council. Aryan sat on the throne, eyes fixed on the horizon beyond the balcony doors. The city below was waking—smoke from chimneys, merchants opening stalls, children running in the streets. It looked normal. Peaceful. But Aryan knew better. Peace was just the calm before the next betrayal. Renn stood first. “My lord, the border lords sent ravens overnight. They offer tribute—gold, horses, daughters. They want peace.” Aryan’s voice was low. “They want time.” Lira crossed her arms. “They’re gathering allies. Scouts saw banners from three houses joining Blackrock. They fear what you did at the rift.” Aryan nodded. “Let them fear.” Kael grunted. “The army is restless. They want battle. They want to see the new power.” Aryan looked at him. “They will see it.” He stood. The system chimed. The gods will punish you.” Aryan smiled. “The gods are next.” He raised his hand. Shadow Dominion – Activated. Shadows rose from the floor—ghosts of the First’s defeated shadows. They grabbed the noble. The noble screamed. Aryan spoke. “Truth.” Shadow Whisper. The noble’s eyes glazed. “We planned to poison the water supply. We wanted chaos. We wanted you dead.” Aryan nodded. “You live. But you serve.” The shadows released him. The noble fell to his knees. Aryan returned to the throne. “Next.” The day continued. Noble after noble. Some confessed. Some lied. All were rewritten. By evening, the council room was full of kneeling nobles. Aryan looked at them. “You are the empire’s spine.” They bowed. Aryan turned to his group. “We move tomorrow.” Renn frowned. “Where?” Aryan looked at the sky. “To the gods.” The system chimed. The gods. He whispered. “I’m coming.” The stars flickered. The empire rose. The Devourer reigned. The hunt began.
