The tranquility Julian promised felt more like a countdown.
Two days passed under the heavy lockdown of the penthouse. Elena spent her time roaming the sprawling rooms, the opulence now feeling like a velvet-lined cell. Julian was a shadow, slipping in and out of the estate at odd hours, his face growing harder with every passing day as the hunt for Marcello dragged on.
On the third night, Julian didn't return.
Elena lay awake in the massive king-sized bed, staring at the ceiling as the digital clock crept past three in the morning. The silence in the bedroom was deafening, broken only by the low, distant hum of the city below. Unable to sleep, she slipped out of the covers, threw on her cream silk robe, and stepped out into the dark hallway.
The penthouse was eerily quiet. She walked toward the grand living room, intending to look out the floor-to-ceiling windows just to see the streetlights, when a strange sound caught her attention.
It wasn't the heavy, deliberate footsteps of Marco or Julian. It was a faint, sharp click—the sound of metal moving against metal, coming from the private elevator foyer.
Elena froze, her heart instantly leaping into her throat. Marco was supposed to be stationed at the main entrance downstairs.
She shrunk back into the shadows of the corridor, her breath catching as the heavy brass elevator doors slid open with a muted hiss. Three figures stepped out into the dim light of the penthouse. They wore dark tactical gear, but they weren't Julian’s men. The lead man pulled night-vision goggles up onto his helmet, revealing a jagged scar across his cheek.
Marcello’s men. They hadn't just breached the perimeter; they had bypassed the security codes.
"Find the girl," the lead man whispered, his voice a harsh, low scrape. "The Don wants her alive. She's Castiglione's only weakness."
Panic, cold and sharp, flooded Elena’s veins. Her mind screamed at her to run, to hide in one of the endless rooms, but Marco’s warning echoed in her head: Danger doesn't stay outside. It waits for a moment of weakness.
She didn't run to a bedroom. She turned and sprinted silently in the opposite direction, her bare feet flying over the marble floors toward the double doors of the private study. Her hands shook violently as she pushed the heavy doors open and lunged behind the massive mahogany desk.
Her fingers scrambled under the hidden lip of the desk drawer, searching frantically for the release button Julian had shown her during her first tour of the room. With a soft click, a secret compartment popped open.
Inside lay the matte-black pistol.
Elena grabbed the weapon, the cold steel sending a shock of raw adrenaline straight through her system. She checked the magazine just like Julian had taught her—full. She racked the slide, the sharp metallic clack sounding dangerously loud in the quiet room.
Footsteps approached the study door, heavy and hurried.
"In here," a voice hissed from the hallway. "The doors are unlatched."
Elena retreated into the deepest corner of the room, behind the heavy leather armchair, lifting her arms and locking her elbows. Her hands trembled, the weight of the gun feeling immense, but she forced her vision to lock onto the center of the doorway.
The double doors burst open. The lead intruder stepped into the room, his weapon raised.
"Squeeze," Elena whispered to herself, Julian's deep voice echoing in her mind. Don't pull. Squeeze.
She squeezed the trigger.
The explosion of the gunshot was deafening in the enclosed study. The recoil jerked her arms upward, but her shot was true. The bullet tore through the lead man's shoulder, throwing him backward into the doorframe with a sharp cry of agony. His weapon clattered to the floor.
"She’s armed!" the second man yelled, ducking back into the hallway as Elena fired a second shot, the bullet shattering a glass display case near the entrance, showering the floor in glittering shards.
Before the men could regroup, the sound of heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the foyer.
Shouts, groans, and the unmistakable, brutal roar of Julian’s voice echoed through the penthouse. The rescue detail had arrived. Within seconds, the remaining intruders in the hallway were neutralized, the sounds of violence cutting off as abruptly as they had started.
Elena kept her gun trained on the doorway, her chest heaving, her vision blurred by tears of pure adrenaline.
A tall, broad silhouette stepped through the smoke and shattered glass of the entrance. Julian. His coat was gone, his white shirt splattered with fresh blood, his dark eyes wild with a terrifying, primal rage. He scanned the room until his gaze landed on Elena, tucked behind the armchair, holding the smoking pistol with a deadly, unwavering grip.
The fury in Julian's face instantly broke, replaced by a raw, breathless shock. He dropped his weapon and ran to her, throwing himself to his knees and ripping the pistol safely from her hands before pulling her violently into his arms.
"Elena," Julian choked out, his voice cracking as he crushed her against his chest. His heart was hammering so hard it felt like it would break through his ribs. "I'm sorry. I was too late. They corrupted a security terminal at the gate—"
"I used it," Elena whispered, her face buried in his neck, her entire body finally breaking into violent sob as the fear caught up to her. "Julian, I hit him. Just like you taught me."
Julian pulled back just enough to frame her face with his large, trembling hands. He looked down at her with a terrifying blend of absolute love and dark pride.
"You did," he growled softly, his thumb wiping a tear from her cheek before pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to her lips. "You defended your space, fratellina. You proved you belong on this throne."
He stood up, lifting her effortlessly into his arms, stepping over the shattered glass and the fallen enemy without a backward glance. The war wasn't over, but as Julian held her close against his chest, Elena knew the girl who sang for tuition bills was dead.
She was a Castiglione now. And the city was going to burn for trying to touch her.
