Followed by Birgit and Nick, Kobak entered the main casino floor. He paused and surveyed the vast human enterprise of what seemed to be ricocheting emotions through his body. For a moment he teetered. Birgit steadied him. Then, like the lifting of a dense fog, single objects came into focus. They were bright glows of passion emanating from every single person. His stomach muscles clenched and he thought to himself, this isn’t working. But then he recalled the soft touch of the Bigfoot’s hand on his shoulder and the even softer touch of its thoughts in his mind. Everything settled down and his body regained stability. He gently removed Birgit’s fingers from his arm. “I’m all right,” he said with a smile.
