LIST OF UNFAMILIAR WORDS  • Tatay or Itay - means "father" in Filipino, the language of the Philippines.  Ex. He is also a good friend of my Tatay Basilyo. • Nanay or Inay - means "mother" in Filipino.  Ex. Bye, Nanay! See you later after class! • Ate - means "older sister" in Filipino. Filipinos call older women (both biologically related and not; around 1-20 years older than them) "ate" as a sign of respect. Can be used by both sexes. Ex.  Ate Julia, can you get me some water?  Nanay look at her! Ate Shiela is doing weird things again!  • Kuya - means "older brother" in Filipino. Filipinos call older men (both biologically related and not; around 1-20 years older than them) "kuya" as a sign of respect. Can be used by both sexes. Ex. Kuya Martin is a strict brother.  • Mano - Taking an elderly's hand to put it on the forehead. Also referred to as 'bless'.  Ex.  I beamed at Nanay Indang as I grabbed her hand to my forehead, it's a sign of respect for the elderly here in our country. • Po and opo - words that are used as a sign of respect in the Philippines. Younger adults or kids use po and opo when communicating with the elderly. Can also translate to a polite "yes" in English.  Ex.  I love you po, Nanay Lucil! You are the best po!  Grandma: Pia, are you there? Pia: Po? (*polite* Yes, why?)  Grandma: Pia, are you there? Pia: Opo. (*polite* Yes.)  • Hija - a Spanish term adapted by the Filipinos. Used by the elderly to refer to women younger than them (around 10-30 years younger). Can be used by both sexes. Ex. Gia hija, come here and see this. • Hijo - a Spanish term adapted by the Filipinos. Used by the elderly to refer to men younger than them (around 10-30 years younger). Can be used by both sexes. Ex.
