In the sitting room, Lizzy and Jane endured Mrs. Morton’s instruction in elocution. Lizzy behaved herself. She resisted the temptation to torment Mrs. Morton with her hopelessness as a pupil. The truth was, these lessons would serve her well. This stay in London was an opportunity to make connexions. She might discover prospective husbands for herself and her sisters. She and Jane took turns reading poetry aloud for about an hour. Mrs. Morton corrected their errors as they went. Next, Mrs. Morton discussed their clothes. “The frocks you’re wearing are hopelessly out of fashion. We will go to Bond Street, as Mr. Darcy suggested, and purchase new gowns for you both.
