13. Your Highness

CHAPTER THIRTEEN. The feast was not disappointing at all and as a matter of fact, as I watched the talented band singing, I could not help but be mesmerized by their beautiful voices and just how expertly they used their instruments. I found myself moving my head to the rhythm of their sounds.   “You know you can always ask me for a dance,” I looked at my husband whose lips were curved into a beautiful smile.   “Would you do me the honor then, My King?” I questioned, mirroring the smile on his face.   He stood up from his seat, stretching his open palm towards me,   “With pleasure, My Queen,” he answered as I took his hand.   He led me to the dance floor and soon enough we were moving rhythmically to the synch of the beats of the beautiful music. As he twirled me around skillfully, my gaze briefly connected with Theo’s and the man wore the most unpleasant expression. He clearly wanted to be anywhere else apart from the feast. The piece of music came to an end and we curtseyed to each other before resuming our seats. Leon declared the dance floor open to everyone and soon it was all just merry and dance around us.   “My King, if I may ask, “He turned his focus from the dancing nobles to me.   “Go ahead,”   “I have not seen the Queen mother since my arrival. Is she not fond of me already?,”   “Of course. She is not in the kingdom but she will be arriving a day before the seven days are over. She would not dare miss her favorite’s son’s wife official crowning,” he smiled but I just nodded. That was a clear sign, she was not a fan of me either. No surprise at all.   “Where is Prince Fabian by the way? He is the other person, I have not laid my eyes on since I made my appearance in Varci. I know you mentioned he was not exactly fond of me but maybe I have a chance of changing that,” I poised, taking a sip off my wine filled chalice.   “Well, he is obviously at the tavern picking on his choice of w****s for the night. One lesson Elizabeth; you can never really spend your effort trying to change people’s opinions of you. Instead, spend your effort doing something that will contradict their thoughts of you. Whether they want to change or not, that is only up to them in the end,”   “I’ll be sure to remember that,” I answered just as I caught sight of Theo making his way towards us.   “Queen, brother,” he nodded at both of us in soulful respect. That was the first time he had actually called me queen. So he was finally getting the fact that I was going to rule over him. I could not help the tiny smirk on my face.   “Theo. Let me guess, you are here to make your leave, aren’t you?”   “You know me, brother. This is not my scene and crowds of arrogant nobles are just not my ideal group of hanging out mates. I’d rather be discussing wars with the soldiers,”   “Well, how can I deny you leave? But do me a favor and dance with the queen,” I almost chocked on the wine. How could he make him dance with Theo?   “Brother, don’t you think it would send a wrong message if I dance with the Queen before thye nobles?” Clever comeback, I had to give him that.     “Why would it? I gave you my permission, didn’t I? I want these nobles to know your clear standing and absolute loyalty to my Queen. So come on, do not be such a festive downer, brother,”   “If you say so Brother,” He was clearly not half happy about the king’s decision and neither was I.   “Your Highness, would you do me the honor of sparing me a dance? “He stretched his open palm towards me.   “Why not Prince? It would be my absolute pleasure,” I spoke with an enthusiasm that did not quite match the annoyance invading my heart.   As he led me down the steps, I could not help but notice the increased grim looks on the nobles’ faces.   “You are lucky I enjoy seeing the annoyance in their faces,” Theo whispered as we began moving to the sound of music, left hand on my waist while his right palm met mine in the air.   “That is one thing we, unfortunately, both agree on,” I agreed as we moved in step. Dancing with Theo was not as annoying as the man himself. As a matter of fact, I had to admit that it was quiet enjoyable.   “I see your level of dancing has not depreciated since the last time I saw you,” he commented.   “Another compliment from Theo. I’m thinking I should begin to get the hang of it from now on,”   “Don’t get used to it Princes. You are still the annoying bastard who is so comfortable about the fact of being Queen, that I’m now thinking she is beginning to get clouded by the fact that my brother is in love with her,”   “Trust me, nothing is clouding my judgment Theo. Your brother’s love for me is not a guarantee that I would still be alive by the time the crown is on my head,” I answered.   “At least you’ve still got your senses right,”   “One can never be too sure in an enemy kingdom,” I spoke as he dipped me skillfully.
