38 William ambled across his garden, through the gate, and towards his final lunch with Reg, Ivy, and Davy. It was a few days earlier than planned, but not as early as Victory’s elders had wanted. This morning he’d preached his final sermon on the island. His first Sunday, he’d despised the congregation. Looked down on their substandard singing and their lack of sophistication. Today he’d only seen friends—family, really. He’d once thought he’d die of boredom here, but he was beginning to understand how they could love this speck on the map. The beauty, the birds, the people. This place would always be special to him. He clattered up the stairs, whistling.
