19 After breakfast, William opened the gate between his place and next door. He was tired of reading. Reg had a carpentry workshop somewhere, and William was curious about Davy—why was he living with his grandparents? The air was filled with a whirring sound and an accompanying buzz. He followed the sound around the back of a large shed. The main doors were open, and Reg stood in front of a spinning lathe. He touched a tool to the wood’s surface, generating a cloud of dust.
