26 The knock came at half past six in the morning. William yawned. Goodness, the kid was keen. He was up as early as the sun. After several weeks of being nagged, William had promised Davy they’d go hiking this morning. Proper hiking, Davy called it, out to the cliffs to see the seabirds. Davy was hopping up and down on the doormat. “Are you ready? Are you ready?” Watching Davy exhausted William. The days when he was young and full of energy were long past. Some mornings it took iron discipline to get out of bed. “Let me grab my pack first.” “Grams gave me enough snacks for both of us.” No surprise there.
