11 The doorbell rang, and Blanche opened the door. Gina and Joy stood outside, holding up their embroidered patches. “We’ve finished our verses,” Gina said. They’d done well. After their initial lack of confidence, they’d managed three verses each. Blanche’s own embroidery was powering on to completion—she had nothing else to do except a little gardening and housework. Blanche took them through to the dining room, where she’d laid her completed embroideries out on the table. Gina leaned forward to look. “The flowers are gorgeous, Blanche. You have a real gift.” Blanche gave them a moment to look more closely and get out their own contributions.
