I rested my feet on top of the dashboard of the car as we drove down the never-ending highway from civilization to the middle of nowhere. At least, that is how it felt as I stared at the screen of my phone. The bars in the corner of the screen slowly diminished until they were down to one. As the clouds drifted by, the only thing I could think about was everything being left behind. I had promised my mother that I would take a year off from college to help her establish herself in a new place after her recent separation from my father. A relationship I had hoped to get away from myself. I had dreams of a dorm room and friends that would keep me from falling back into those arguments that made me angry beyond belief. My black leggings felt warm against the sunlight, and I couldn’t help
