Chapter 4 Layla's Pov I drifted to what seemed like sleep but I started seeing flashes of a previous life. I saw Jasper, my lover, Seraphina and Aiden, my brother. This was the life I knew. I had married Jasper and we had difficulties making babies. Seraphina, my best friend, walked into my house one day and claimed to be pregnant for Jasper, my husband. I felt betrayed and devastated. If Jasper wanted a mistress, it could have been anyone else. Why did it have to be my best friend? Why did she set her eyes on my husband? "Seraphina, how could you betray me like this? You know how much Jasper and I love each other and you went ahead to seduce him. Why?" I confronted her and she just laughed at me. "Well, it's not my fault you can't give him a child. I didn't have to do much and I got him in bed." She mocked, "Look how overjoyed he is, he didn't even bother to confirm whether I am actually pregnant and whether the child is even his" "Wait, you are not even pregnant? You lying sco-" "I never said I wasn't pregnant. I just said he didn't bother to find out whether I was saying the truth or not." she smiled wickedly. At this moment, Jasper walked in, picked her up and twirled her around. He didn't even mind my presence, no, it was more like he didn't even notice my presence. I slipped away to my room and cried. There was nothing I could do. I couldn't fight them because I had always been the weakest of the Moonhaven pack. Before my parents died, they had always protected me and after them, I had my brother, Aiden, by my side. Some time later, I had Jasper, the Alpha of Moonhaven, to protect me as I had become his Luna. From my room, I heard noises of the celebration Jasper hosted for Seraphina and her unborn baby, which I had seriously come to doubt it's authenticity. I tossed and turned in my bed for hours before I was able to find some sleep. Then another flash. "Layla, the test confirms that you are pregnant and the child you're carrying the heir of Alpha Jasper." Doctor Allan announced to me with much gusto. I was very thrilled at the revelation. I had become pregnant, three weeks after Jasper had celebrated Seraphina's pregnancy. My first thought was to keep it a secret from Jasper since he cared little about me now that Seraphina was in the picture, but I had a change of heart the moment I got home. "Layla? Could you get me some olives from the kitchen or instruct one of the maids to do so for me?" Seraphina smirked as she requested "politely". I was irked at the fact that she even had the boldness to order me. "You are pregnant, your highness, not crippled. Do it yourself" I replied with equal "politeness" and finished with a mock bow. But as I turned to leave, I saw him standing at the door with an unpleasant look on his face. "Echo? Get Seraphina a plate of olives from the kitchen" Jasper ordered with a booming voice as he made his way to the couch where Seraphina sat. Instantly, I knew I had been played. I saw the barely disguised look of victory on Seraphina's face and I realized I had just fallen for her plan. I smiled weakly and left the sitting room. I was hurt but I refused to let it show. Yet another flash. While Jasper and Seraphina were seated, all cozy and warm, I walked in and broke the news of my pregnancy. "Jasper, I'm pregnant." "What!?" Both Jasper and Seraphina exclaimed, one with joy while the other in sheer horror. I so much enjoyed the look on her face the moment she heard the news. "Doctor Allan confirmed it to me yesterday. More importantly, the child I carry has been confirmed to be your heir. The heir you had always wanted." I announced, taking note of the myriad of expressions that graced Seraphina's face; shock, panic, horror, confusion, anger, fear, and the evil glint in her eyes to mention but a few. I was really enjoying this moment. I took special time to savour this moment. Jasper picked me up and twirled me around, rejoicing. He was so happy that his words became incoherent. Seeing the joyful look on his face, I forgot about my initial plan for revenge and smiled as joy bubbled within me. "This calls for a celebration! Let's have a party! Just like we did for Seraphina." Jasper immediately began to make plans for another celebration but I wasn't having any of it. "I'd rather not. It's best we keep it under wraps for the time being. Let Seraphina continue to bask in the glow of being the mother of the heir. What is most important is that you have an heir, who it is from doesn't matter much." I was able to convince him to forgo the celebration. I saw the demonic look in Seraphina's eyes but I didn't take notice of it, which was my undoing. And another flash... A week later, Seraphina was groaning in pain as she vomited blood. My maid, Echo, had accused me of poisoning Seraphina's drink, much to my chagrin. "Why? She was your best friend! Why would you do this to her?" Jasper raged, leaving me even more confused than ever. "Is this some sort of joke? What makes you think that I would want to poison her?" I asked back, still confused as to what was happening. "Get out!" Jasper barked. I had never seen him that angry before so I left in a hurry before he would hit me in a fit of rage. I returned to my room and tried to eavesdrop on everything. The things I heard left me speechless. "I overheard Echo saying that it was Layla that poisoned the drink that Seraphina took."
