Chapter 5 Layla's Pov I poisoned Seraphina's drink? That was a lie! My thoughts echoed those of the other maid. "She poisoned Seraphina's drink? That is a lie!" "I'm only telling you what I heard. Echo has no reason to lie against Luna Layla so I believe it is the truth." the first maid interjected. "But the Luna has always been a lovable person. Seraphina on the other hand, not so much." the second maid defended, "besides, even if she did poison her, Seraphina deserved it. Plus our Luna is pregnant with the Alpha's heir." "I also heard that the pregnancy was a ruse." "What!?" the second maid exclaimed. What!? I also exclaimed. Who was peddling these rumours? Surely Doctor Allan would be there to defend my pregnancy. "Yes. Doctor Allan confirmed this. He claimed that he never carried out any test on Layla recently. Think about it, why else would she refuse the celebration?" the first maid, who I could now swear was an avid supporter of Seraphina, explained. I stubbornly refused to believe that Jasper would be so gullible as to believe all these baseless accusations leveled against me. How wrong I was. A few hours later, some guards stormed into my room, blindfolded me and dragged me out. I tried as much as I could to resist but I had always been the weakest wolf in the pack so there was little I could do. "Where are you taking me? I am the Luna of this pack! Jasper would not be very happy at the way you're treating me!" I tried to threaten them with Jasper's name but they wouldn't budge. At that point, I knew that something was wrong. --- Alex's Pov "Selene? Selene! Get help!" I shouted as I tried my best to get Iris, who had been twisting and turning in bed, to wake up. If it had just been the twisting and turning, I'd have just chalked it up to the dreams she was having. But she had turned pale about an hour ago and was growing paler still. Her veins were blue and bulging against her skin as she strained, twisted and turned. Occasionally, her eyes would open slightly and I noticed that it glowed blue. It only did when she was about to wolf out. "Selene, please hurry." I muttered, despite knowing she couldn't hear me because she had gone to get the doctors to come over for assistance. "She's in there with Alex." I had never been so relieved to hear Selene's voice since the day Iris introduced her to me. I could also hear the doctors; Mal, Alexander and Kirigan, shuffling behind her. Thankfully, all three doctors came along. "What happened to her?" Doctor Alexander asked as he took her pulse, motioning to Mal to hand him some apparatus from the bag he carried. "She took the herbs that were prescribed for her and she fell asleep. A few minutes later, she became restless, twisting, turning and straining. Almost as if she is about to wolf out. So I sent Selene to get help." I narrated what I witnessed to the doctors, as they carried about their business. I motioned to Selene to give them space to work, which she promptly did. "Is she going to be fine, Uncle Kirigan?" Selene asked Doctor Kirigan who held Iris's eyelid open and looked into her eye for a while before letting the eyelid slip back into place, before scribbling something on a piece of paper and passing it to Doctor Mal who was mixing some herbs. "For the most part, yes. She seems to be regaining her memories. It's just that her body is changing, adjusting to match whatever ordeal her memory had blocked out. But she will be fine." Doctor Kirigan explained. "This should help with the restlessness and the weakness." Doctor Mal spoke up. It was unknown when he finished concocting the mixture but after he fed it the Iris, she became a lot calmer and face regained some colour. I was a lot more relieved, seeing that she had calmed down considerably. Only the occasional frowning let us know that she was still dreaming, or rather, recovering her memories. Selene and I refused to leave her side again and it was lucky that Nora was still fast asleep through all this. --- Layla's Pov I couldn't see where I was brought to but I could still tell where it was. I had been here enough times as Luna of the Moonhaven pack to recognise the scent of the Trial grounds. I still stubbornly refused to believe I was undergoing trial. If Seraphina was actually poisoned, then someone must taken advantage of the fact that she had betrayed me to attempt to kill her. Only, the person should have known that I wouldn't have killed Seraphina, no matter what she did. I perceived a few familiar scents; one was Aiden, my brother, there was also Jasper, Seraphina and Echo. My brothers heart was racing, beating erratically, while Jasper's was calm and almost dull. Seraphina's heart beat was slow, weaker than it had always been. It seemed like she really had been poisoned. "I know my sister. She's innocent. She didn't do it." Aiden exclaimed, trying his best to prove my innocence but all he could do was explain. He had no evidence to back up his claim. "Then, let her drink from the cup to prove her innocence." Jasper replied, his voice was cold. Soon, someone removed the blindfold, I glanced around and stared hard at Jasper. He looked back at me without emotion in his eyes. At that moment, he was the Alpha of Moonhaven, not my husband. Before I drank the wine, I looked around and I saw Seraphina snickering in the distance. Instantly, I knew I had been set up. I understood everything then. She was threatened by my pregnancy, so she decided to remove me from the picture. I brought the cup to my lips and emptied it's content in tears. Almost immediately, I felt numb all over and I drifted off. I died, and then, I woke up.
