He remembered her hands on his head, pressing in. That was why she left him; why she made him forget. She never came back. * * * * Jamey At the end of Jamey’s forest path was a dark green lake surrounded by an empty beach of white sand glowing in the moonlight, a pier. A raft waited for him at the pier’s end. The knowledge of how to launch and navigate the raft awaited him on the raft itself. When Jamey’s bare feet touched the rough wood of the tree trunks lashed together he knew, as if the knowledge had passed through his skin, into his feet, and up into his brain. He wished, as he steered the boat, that he had learned the constellations.
